The Carolina Hurricanes are champions once again. On Sunday, they defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6 to clinch their 2nd Stanley Cup. Following the win, their head coach, Rod Brind’Amour, scripted NHL history.
The Canes entered Game 6 at the T-Mobile Arena on Sunday with a 3-2 lead in the series. After losing in 2OT in Game 3, the Carolina-based side won 5-3 in Game 4 and followed this up with a 4-2 win in Game 5 at the Lenovo Center.
The series, which had seen several goals and blown leads, saw its first and only shutout on Sunday. The Hurricanes scored once in each period. The 3-0 victory ended their 20-year drought and saw them become champions of the NHL for just the 2nd time in their franchise history.

In 2006, the team won its first Stanley Cup by beating the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7. Their captain that year was Rod Brind’Amour. The Canadian international was the leader of the side and hoisted Lord Stanley for the first time in their franchise history.
Two decades later, Brind’Amour has lifted the title again. This time, as the head coach of the team.
With the historic triumph on Sunday, he becomes just the 4th person in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup with the same franchise as captain and head coach. The other three are Toe Blake (Montreal Canadiens), Hap Day (Toronto Maple Leafs), and Cooney Weiland (Boston Bruins), as per Sportnet.

Rod Brind’Amour goes viral for his title celebrations
Rod Brind’Amour got his hands on the Stanley Cup once again on Sunday. The former NHL star later went viral for his celebrations with the trophy.

After receiving the trophy from goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov, the 55-year-old would bear hug the title and dance a little bit on the ice. The Hurricanes later shared a video of him lifting the title in 2006 and claimed it was still “iconic.“

In 2011, Brind’Amour was named an assistant and development coach of the team. In 2018, he was hired as the head coach of the team.
In his first season, he led the team to its first playoff berth in a decade as they reached the Eastern Conference Final (ECF). They ended up getting swept 4-0 by the Boston Bruins in this series.
In 2023, the Canes got swept in the ECF once again as they lost 4-0 against the Florida Panthers. They suffered a similar fate last year as the Panthers defeated them again in the ECF. This time, they avoided getting swept but still ended up short as they lost 4-1.
Rod Brind’Amour claims he wanted to win the trophy as a coach for these Hurricanes stars
Rod Brind’Amour will go down as one of the greatest names in Carolina Hurricanes history. After lifting the title as the captain in 2006, he led the team to their second triumph as head coach in 2026.

While speaking with ESPN’s Emily Kaplan after the game, he claimed that he wanted to win as a coach for these Hurricanes stars.
I’m so happy for these guys, you know. I wanted it as a player, I really wanted it. But I wanted it for these guys as a coach, because it means so much. To see how happy they are, I’m an old guy now. But I had my one, trust me I’m happy we got another one, but it’s for these guys.

Jordan Staal, the current captain of the team and the longest tenured Hurricanes star, was named the MVP of the playoffs. He finished with 12 points (8 goals and 4 assists), with 6 goals in the final.
The Canes will now look to continue this dominant run into next season and try to repeat as champions. Before that, they will party hard and celebrate their huge win.
