The fast-paced nature of the ATP Tour means Alexander Zverev will have to refocus his attention on winning another after just winning his first Grand Slam at the French Open earlier this month. The German star arrived in Halle for the ATP 500 tournament as he kicks off preparation for the grass season.

Fresh off the Roland Garros, Zverev arrives at the Terra Wortmann Open with a lot of confidence. The 29-year-old won his elusive Grand Slam title at the Court Philippe-Chatrier after beating Flavio Cobolli in a nervy, thrilling five-set final in the French Open. He basked in the glory of the triumph, becoming the first German to win a Grand Slam in over 20 years.

After winning the title, he withdrew from last week’s Stuttgart Open, opting for more rest and celebration after the Roland Garros. There were rumors that he might not play in any grass-court tournament ahead of Wimbledon, but he put those rumors to bed by arriving in Germany for the Halle Open.

Competing in Halle means he will have to balance his desire to reflect on his recent achievement with the need to prepare for his latest title bid at the Terra Wortmann Open, which can be tricky at times. So many players tend to lose in the opening rounds of a new tournament after a big title win.

However, Zverev has the experience to balance that as he continues to push for more silverware. He has never won the Halle title, reaching the final in 2016 and 2017. In an interview with ATP, Zverev admitted that he’s ready to go again for another title just days after winning the French Open in Paris:

Obviously, it’s a phenomenal feeling because that’s what you’ve worked for your whole life and your whole career. The people around you have worked for it. I’m extremely happy and extremely proud of what we’ve achieved in Paris, but of course, we’re already back at a new tournament. The tournament is in Germany, so I want to perform at my best and play at my highest level. I’ve been training quite hard and very well.

Zverev faces a huge task at the Halle Open, as five top-10 players will be competing in the tournament. The German star isn’t known to play his best tennis on grass, but things could change following his French Open triumph. With confidence, Zverev can finally channel his focus towards winning the Halle title for the first time in his career.

Alexander Zverev doesn’t know what to expect in his first tournament on grass

One major complaint from players about tour events is the quick switch from hard court to clay and then to grass within a space of six months. That can be gruesome to players who are trying to find their rhythm on tour, as they have to get used to each of the surfaces before playing in the big tournaments.

Alexander Zverev is no different from other players. Having gained form and perfect rhythm on clay, he will now have to try to get used to the grass court ahead of the Wimbledon Championships in London. During the aforementioned interview, Zverev that doesn’t know what to expect from the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle:

It’s a difficult change going from a good, but long, clay court season to a grass court in just a couple of days. But I’ll give it my all and be ready. I don’t know yet, I’ll be honest. I’ve only had two practice days. It’s a tough adjustment, it’s tough to come from the clay courts to grass courts and we didn’t have the best weather here yet, so I haven’t had a lot of practice, but tennis-wise I do feel like I’m playing good.

Zverev will open his campaign against Vit Kopriva in the first round of the tournament. It will be their first meeting on tour, which will open their head-to-head record. In the second round, he’s projected to face Joao Fonseca, while he could take on defending champion Alexander Bublik in the third round.
