There is no doubt that Islam Makhachev stands as one of the most dominant fighters on the current UFC roster. The Dagestani phenom delivered an impressive run at lightweight and made history by becoming an 11th two-division champion while extending his UFC winning streak to 16 straight victories. Now, Makhachev is set to take on Irish star Ian Garry at UFC 330 in his first welterweight title defense.
Makhachev last competed at UFC 322 on November 15, 2025, where he dominated former welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena. Makhachev landed 4 takedowns from 4 attempts and outstruck Maddalena with around 140 total strikes while neutralizing his opponent. He won by unanimous decision after almost 20 minutes of control, tying UFC legend Anderson Silva‘s 16-fight win streak record.
Speculation initially surrounded Makhachev’s first welterweight title defense, with multiple rising contenders being discussed. However, Ian Garry consistently stood out as the leading frontrunner for the matchup due to his #1 divisional ranking and recent form. UFC CEO Dana White has now officially confirmed the fight for UFC 330 on August 15, 2026, at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.

Garry’s UFC journey has showcased his ability to win in the welterweight division. He suffered his first professional loss against Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 in a short-notice bout. However, ‘The Future’ bounced back with a win over Carlos Prates at UFC Kansas City in April 2025. He further strengthened his title contention at UFC Qatar with a unanimous decision victory over former champion Belal Muhammad.
Prates had also been rising in welterweight title discussions after strong recent form. He made a statement by knocking out former champion Leon Edwards at UFC 322. His dominant win over Jack Della Maddalena at UFC Perth further strengthened his own title hopes. However, Prates later admitted Garry’s short-notice wins likely influenced the UFC’s decision to award the Irish contender the title shot.
The matchup also serves as a second chapter in the Dagestan vs. Ireland rivalry, first seen at UFC 229 during Khabib Nurmagomedov’s heated fight with Conor McGregor. Makhachev, a protege of Nurmagomedov, continues the Dagestani legacy in this rivalry. Garry has trained with and often praised McGregor, whom he considers a major idol, adding extra narrative weight to the clash.
UFC 330 is also set to feature a stacked lineup with multiple high-profile bouts. Mackenzie Dern will defend her strawweight title against Gillian Robertson in the co-main event. The undercard includes Edson Barboza facing Esteban Ribovics and Vicente Luque taking on Tresean Gore. However, the main attraction remains Islam Makhachev’s first title defense at 170 pounds.
Islam Makhachev shrugs off Ian Garry’s trash talk while admitting it could boost marketability
Islam Makhachev’s first title defense remained a major topic of discussion in recent months. Many believed fighters like Michael Morales and Carlos Prates would be in contention due to their entertaining styles. However, Makhachev was originally adamant about facing former champion Kamaru Usman because of his legacy. The debate over his opponent continued until the UFC finalized the title direction.

Garry has been vocal about his shot at the Dagestani welterweight champion ever since his win at UFC Qatar. The Irishman has continued to target Makhachev on social media, while also questioning the extent of the champion’s reported hand injury. However, the pound-for-pound king recently weighed in on Garry’s personality, dismissed the noise around him, and recognized its impact on his marketability.
How can a man who lost yesterday or the day before talk any trash? So I don’t care about his trash talk. Maybe it does some good for the business, but it doesn’t bother me at all. Style-wise, he is a tricky fighter; he constantly runs away and fights on the back foot. His opponents always have to chase him. I wouldn’t say he’s an entertaining fighter.

Islam Makhachev was also vocal about Ian Garry leapfrogging others in the welterweight title picture. He publicly expressed interest in facing Carlos Prates instead, viewing him as a more immediate challenge. The Dagestani star acknowledged that Prates carried more hype and was seen as a more exciting opponent than Garry. However, UFC 330 is now officially set, finalizing the direction of the title storyline.
