Nneka Ogwumike returned to the Los Angeles Sparks, the team that drafted her this offseason, after a tumultuous and disappointing run with the Seattle Storm the past two campaigns.

The Stanford alum felt that it was the best way for her to finish off her career, as she has been residing in California since college. Moreover, the Storm felt they were better off developing their young squad rather than running it back with their group of veterans.

In the offseason, the 35-year-old was busy leading the players’ charge to get a new, lucrative collective bargaining agreement. After several hours of unending discussions, she and her team of executive leaders ended up getting a landmark agreement.

Players ended up earning million-dollar salaries, which was fitting considering the league was celebrating its 30th anniversary. The 2016 league MVP’s contributions would go down in history, as she was a game-changer as President of the Players’ Association.

With the Sparks, she was expected to help the team’s younger big women develop. She did that part, as Cameron Brink has made strides this season.

But Nneka Ogwumike’s year was not about to go to waste as a mere veteran. When the Sparks welcomed the New York Liberty to Crypto.com Arena, the forward and her teammates battled to come back from a first-half deficit.

After Ogwumike intentionally fouled Breanna Stewart with nine seconds left, the two-time league MVP converted just one. Then, the Sparks raced back, and Erica Wheeler eventually found her fellow veteran. The 2016 champion went on to launch a buzzer-beating three-pointer that won them the game.

Fans rejoice as Nneka Ogwumike decides WNBA’s 30th anniversary celebrations

As her teammates raced towards and hugged her, Crypto.com Arena rejoiced. So did basketball fans, as Nneka Ogwumike’s game-winner was a fitting end to the WNBA’s 30th anniversary celebrations, that too in front of the Sparks’ royalty.

Fans believe this was the basketball gods shining upon the league. Not only did the buzzer-beater stun them, but for Madam President, as the forward is affectionately known, to do that was fitting. Check out examples of those reactions below.

The significance of the day was evident when Hall of Famer and Sparks legend Lisa Leslie had to help an emotional Nneka Ogwumike stop shedding tears. The league had come a long way from the time when top players earned in five digits. It seems the 6’2″ star knew what she had just done.

‘Emotional’ Nneka Ogwumike explains why this win means so much for her

Nneka Ogwumike was ecstatic after draining the game-winner. But she turned emotional when the courtside reporter asked her about the significance of it in a year where the WNBA took strides under her leadership.

It feels really good. I’ve been with the Sparks for so long… It’s emotional seeing all of these legends in the building. People that didn’t get paid their value and they are still coming here and supporting us. I’m so grateful.

Nneka Ogwumike replied

Her emotions were enough to reveal what this year has been for the former first-overall pick, and how her contributions have changed women’s basketball. No wonder the packed crowd inside Crypto.com Arena cheered loudly when she said this.
