Marketa Vondrousova is slapped with a four-year ban by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) for refusing an out-of-competition anti-doping test last December. Andy Roddick, in an episode of his Served podcast, has given his verdict on the case.

The reason why Vondrousova chose not to give the test was due to mental health and safety concerns. According to ITIA Senior Director of Anti-Doping, Nicole Sapstead, a female doping-control officer came to her home, and Vondrousova herself had signed the refusal form outside before leaving her apartment to walk her dog. It was also made very clear to Vondrousova that refusing the test would lead to “some significant consequences“.

The tennis world is divided over this case. Some can’t make sense of this, with others also saying Vondrousova is the only one responsible here. Others are criticizing the ITIA for the four-year ban it imposed on the 26-year-old. Many fellow players have come out in support of the former World No.6, slamming the ITIA for the harsh punishment.

Roddick, too, thinks a four-year ban is way too much. But he also thinks that if players start giving anxiety as the reason for refusing the test, it will create a loophole.

Let’s say my daughter was 26 years old and she didn’t know who was at her door; I would tell her not to answer. Right? […] And this is quite the loophole for anyone who is doing something they shouldn’t be doing as far as performance-enhancing drugs. Like, if this loophole is created, how do you ever test someone?

Vondrousova’s lawyer said they are considering an appeal. If the verdict doesn’t change after the appeal and Vondrousova remains on the sidelines for four years, she will be returning at the age of 30.

You got a four-year suspension. That’s about as much as I’ve seen in tennis. Crazy. Don’t like it… She can still appeal it. It’s not the official ruling. But what they’re saying is that she’s going to get suspended for four years. That’s borderline career-ending. That is for not a positive test.

The 2023 Wimbledon champion was last seen in action in this year’s Adelaide International. After winning her opening-round match, she handed the walkover to her second-round opponent due to injury issues.

She was next scheduled to face Karolina Pliskova in the opening round of the Nottingham Open, but Raducanu chose to withdraw from the tournament. She was heavily criticized by Andy Roddick for this decision.

I mean, you just got to play. You got to play a ton of matches. You have to. And once you find form, you press the gas sometimes, right? Unless you’re worried about your body. I mean, she’s not 39, you know, like Novak [Djokovic], you got to get, and I say this because I’m such a fan of her game.

Andy Roddick said on his Served podcast

Raducanu will next be seen in action at Wimbledon, the main draw of which is set to start on June 29. The 23-year-old has never progressed beyond the fourth round of her home Slam, reaching the stage in 2021 and 2024.

Raducanu, in fact, has not made the quarterfinals of any Major since her fairytale run at the 2021 US Open. She also has not yet clinched a title since that Major win. At Wimbledon, Iga Swiatek will be competing as the defending champion.
