Serena Williams‘ coach, Rennae Stubbs, doesn’t know how to feel about the whole controversy surrounding Marketa Vondrousova. The 2023 Wimbledon champion refused an out-of-competition drug test on December 3 last year, and because of this, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) handed her a four-year ban.

She refused the test due to mental health and safety concerns. Vondrousova, in her defense, said she suffers from severe anxiety, and even though she had let doping control officers conduct the test outside of the scheduled window, she couldn’t let the officer in her apartment because it was late at night (around 8 pm).

Also, Vondrousova said the doping control officer admitted during the trial that she did not follow the prescribed protocol. When Vondrousova answered the doorbell, she was simply told ‘ITF doping’, that the officer did not show her ID card, and neither asked the tennis player to show her’s.

The officer also made it clear that she would only be leaving if Vondrousova signs the refusal form, which the former World No.6 did “under stress”. As per the Czech ace, the “human side of the system is completely lost“. She thinks she will have to pay the price for the doping control officer’s mistakes: a ban of four years.

Four years? I just don’t know how I feel about this. I know Marketa, I’ve been around her a lot. She just seems the last person in the world to take anything to enhance her performance. Seriously. It feels so heavy. Four years is a life sentence in terms of a tennis player. Her reputation is just ruined. Her career is probably over. Four years is just a death sentence in a professional tennis world.

Rennae Stubbs said on The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast

The ITIA will issue the full written decision in the near future. Vondrousova will then be considering an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Former World No.1 Simona Halep also faced a four-year ban from the ITIA due to accidental contamination. But her ban was reduced to nine months after her appeal to the CAS.

Marketa Vondrousova shares details about the hearing

Marketa Vondrousova sat for a long interview with iSport, during which she revealed what happened during the trial. The doping control officer admitted in court that she had come to test a tennis player for the first time and had no idea what Vondrousova looked like until she searched her on the internet.

She started talking to me right away. If my sister, who looks like me, had come down instead of me, the commissioner wouldn’t have recognized me at all. When the lawyer asked her if she had ID’d me, she said no, that she had looked me up on the internet beforehand to see what I looked like. She actually said that at the hearing. It’s crazy.

Her suspension will end on 21 June 2030. By that time, she will be 30 years old.

If I had a guilty conscience, I would say on the intercom that I wasn’t Marketa, but her sister, and nothing would have happened. It wouldn’t even have been a missed test, because according to the system, I didn’t even have to be there at that hour.

The former World No.6 last won a title at the 2025 Berlin Open. Apart from her victory at the 2023 Wimbledon, Vondrousova also reached the final of the 2019 US Open, losing the match to Ash Barty.

Vondrousova last played a match in the first round of this year’s Adelaide International. She won the match but withdrew from her second-round match due to injury issues.
