Fourth seed Ben Shelton fought a tough battle in the first round of the ongoing Wimbledon on Tuesday (June 30), but couldn’t end the match in his favor. Against him was qualifier Otto Virtanen, who, with scores of 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(8), 6-2, 7-6(11-9) in four hours and 21 minutes, registered the biggest win of his career.

The World No.140, before this match, had never defeated a top 20 player. It was his career’s second appearance in a Wimbledon main draw match following the 2024 season (reached the second round). Shelton, at the press conference after his upset, gave no excuse for the defeat and gave full credit to the Finnish ace.

It was a very tough defeat. Undoubtedly, one of the toughest of my entire career. I have to give a lot of credit to Otto because he played an exceptional match. I felt like I was trailing throughout the entire match. I wasn’t precise with my serve, which made it difficult to earn easy points. I had to work extremely hard in nearly every game, and he was hitting the ball incredibly well from the baseline.

The 25-year-old will next be locking horns with Arthur Fery. If Virtanen wins the match, he will reach his career’s first Grand Slam third round. Before entering Wimbledon, Virtanen lost the Nottingham Challenger to Christopher O’Connell. He also made the final of the Birmingham Challenger but failed to go past Yunchaokete Bu.

In the second set, I got a break very early and managed to maintain the lead. In the fifth set, I had three chances at 15-40 to break him, and in all those moments, he played extraordinary points. Sometimes tennis works like that.

Shelton is a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist, reaching the stage at the 2023 US Open and the 2025 Australian Open. At Wimbledon, he produced his best performance by reaching the quarterfinals in 2025 (lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner).

Ben Shelton doesn’t think 2026 has been a good season for him

Ben Shelton, even though he made deep runs and won titles this season, has also suffered quite a few early exits. He reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open (lost to Jannik Sinner) and won titles at the Dallas Open and Stuttgart Open by defeating compatriot Taylor Fritz both times.

He also reached his career’s third clay-court final at the Munich Open and won the title against Flavio Cobolli. But after that, he suffered four consecutive early-round exits on the clay swing, including at the French Open (lost to Raphael Collignon in the second round). At the press conference after his Wimbledon exit, Shelton admitted that the 2026 season has been inconsistent so far.

But everything else has been quite poor. It hasn’t been a good year for me. It’s been a tough season. I’ve lost many closely contested matches, many tiebreaks, and many third sets. I think sometimes these things happen, but this year it has happened much more than I would have liked.

Shelton has so far lifted one grass-court title (this year’s Stuttgart Open) in his career. It was also his career’s first final on grass. The American has so far played eight singles finals, winning six titles.

Next is the North American hardcourt swing. Shelton will be competing at the Canadian Open as the defending champion. Last year, he defeated Karen Khachanov to win his career’s first Masters 1000 title. He then reached the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open. But during the US Open third round, a left shoulder injury forced him to throw in the towel.
