Zizou Bergs vented his frustration at the umpire about his opponent Arthur Fery‘s misbehavior during their third-round match at the Wimbledon Championships. The Belgian star lost his cool in the fifth set as he was on the brink of defeat after Fery had produced one of the best performances of his career.

Bergs had entered the match as the favorite against British wildcard Fery, having defeated French star Ugo Humbert in the second round. Bergs kicked off the match with the right momentum as he broke him twice to claim the first set 6-2. However, Bergs failed to maintain his momentum, leading Fery to react well in the second set, pushing his opponent deep into the baseline.

The 23-year-old British star found a way to break the Belgian in the tenth game before serving for the set. But then immediately switched off in the next set as Bergs made sure his powerful forehand shots forced Fery into making mistakes. But the tables turned quickly as Bergs was noticeably frustrated in the fourth set with Fery’s thunderbolt serves and, on many occasions, looked to his team in the players’ box.

In the fifth set, the rattled Bergs became vocal about Fery’s serves as the crowd was against him. He began to complain that the British star was intentionally hitting the serve on the net, which then dropped to his side court. Also, each time Bergs failed to receive Fery’s serve, the latter always turned to the crowd and yelled “yes”.

When down 2-7 in the tiebreak, Bergs vented his frustration to the umpire, pointing out that Fery hadn’t apologized to him even after multiple of his shots had hit the net cord on their way to the other side. Bergs had lost multiple points due to Fery’s tactics, but Fery admitted to the umpire that he didn’t do anything wrong, which led the Belgian to react:

He keeps hitting the net and he keeps shouting afterwards straight ‘yeah.’ It’s unbelievable. It’s zero fair play. How many times he hits the net and never says he’s sorry.

Reports from the BBC suggest that Bergs was majorly unhappy with Fery for celebrating each point with so much pathos. Bergs failed to gain back control of the tie, and Fery ran away with the victory 2-6, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(4), reaching his maiden Grand Slam fourth round. Fery becomes the only British player left in the draw, carrying his country’s hope in the absence of Jack Draper, who withdrew from the grass-court Grand Slam due to injury.

Arthur Fery opens up on how he overcame Zizou Bergs at Wimbledon

Arthur Fery, World No.114, was a top junior player who spent four years playing college tennis at Stanford University. However, he had difficulty transitioning from junior to professional tennis. But this year’s grass-court season has been a revelation for the 23-year-old, who reached the quarter-finals of the Queen’s Club Championships.

After four and a half hours on the court, Fery finally got the better of Zizou Bergs to reach the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships, for the first time in his career. He lay down on the ground for a few minutes in disbelief before rising to shake hands with Bergs. After the match, he opened up on what he did to overcome Bergs in the third round:

I was just trying to back my fighting spirit, and use that to my advantage. Just try and base my whole game around that. Just keep going. I knew that he could maybe get a little shaky when he was getting close to winning the match, as well. I don’t think he’s made the fourth round of a slam either.

Fery suffered nosebleeds three times that required medical attention during his win against Bergs at Court 18, the same court he won his two previous matches on. He will face Grigor Dimitrov, who triumphed over Matteo Berrettini in their third-round match, on Monday (July 6).
