Dodgers’ Eliezer Alfonzo Jr. Receives Standing Ovation From Fans During MLB Debut Following Heartbreaking Family Tragedy

It was a very emotional day for Eliezer Alfonzo Jr. on Sunday. Hours after receiving heartbreaking news regarding his family, the rookie catcher made his MLB debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fans at Dodger Stadium gave him a standing ovation as he made his way to the plate for his first major league at-bat.
On June 24, two devastating earthquakes struck the country of Venezuela. As per reports, the estimated death toll following these twin earthquakes exceeded 3,000. More than 10,000 people are said to be injured and missing after this destruction.
On Sunday, as the Dodgers prepared to take on the San Diego Padres in the final game of the 4-game series, they had Alfonzo Jr. lined up to make his MLB debut. Before the game, reports from Venezuela emerged that his sister, Eliana, and stepmother, Patricia, were found dead.
Despite this tragic loss, the player put on the battle gear and played in the game. He was batting ninth in his first MLB game.
As he made his way to the plate in the third inning, the spectators got off their seats. A huge round of applause rang across Dodger Stadium.

Alfonzo Jr. was called up to the big leagues a day earlier. The 26-year-old had previously spent nearly a decade in the minor leagues.
He was signed by the Detroit Tigers in 2016 as an international free agent. He would work his way through the farm system of the Tigers before joining the Dodgers on a minor league deal in November 2025.
He started the season in Triple-A with the Oklahoma City Comets. In 49 games and 166 at-bats, he had a slash line of .313/.392/.422 with 1 home run and 17 RBIs.
Miguel Rojas and Dave Roberts extended support to Eliezer Alfonzo Jr. in tough time
Eliezer Alfonzo Jr. made his MLB debut with a heavy heart following the loss of his sister and stepmother. Team veteran Miguel Rojas and manager Dave Roberts were both firmly behind him during this tough period.

Both of them had a good relationship with his father, Eliezer Alfonzo Sr., who played 6 seasons in the major leagues. He was teammates with Roberts at the San Francisco Giants and played Winter Ball in Venezuela with Rojas.
During the game, Alfonzo Jr. was seen wearing a cap with “E y P” and “RIP” above the brim. It also featured “VZ” on the side, in solidarity with his home country.
Rojas, meanwhile, had written “ALFONZO” next to a cross and “FUERZA MATATÁN,” in reference to Alfonzo Sr.’s nickname.

In the press conference, Roberts expressed that Alfonzo Jr. realized a dream of playing in the MLB. He then added that their hearts broke for him.

Alfonzo Jr. got two at-bats in his first MLB game. He did not get a hit and was replaced in the 7th inning by Tommy Edman.

After several years in the minor leagues, Eliezer Alfonzo Jr. finally got the chance to play in an MLB game. Unfortunately for him, it came just a few hours after reports confirmed the demise of his sister and his stepmother. Following the game, he shared an emotional message regarding his sister.

In the clubhouse, the rookie spoke mostly in Spanish. When he spoke in English, he shared that he had spoken with his sister around 3 weeks ago about the dream she had.
This is a tough moment because, like three weeks ago she told me that she had a beautiful dream, but she wasn’t going to tell me anything until the dream came true, and I’m pretty sure the dream was something about this. I wish she would, she was, she was alive to watch me playing in the big leagues.

Speaking of the game, the Los Angeles Dodgers lost 5-2. Though they failed to get the 4-game sweep, they remained 14 games ahead of their rivals in the National League West standings with a 59-34 record.
