The story of LeBron James‘ next club continues to gather headlines with every passing day. It has been one of the major talking points in the offseason after it was revealed that he will become an unrestricted free agent following his decision to call time on his Los Angeles Lakers spell.
The 2026-27 campaign will represent James’ 24th season in the NBA. While it can be a risk for teams to sign a player who is 41 years old, he is coming off a string of impressive playoff performances this year.
James’ longtime friend and agent Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group shared the key factors he has been studying to help James find his next team.
Today, we talked about defensive ratings, on-ball defensive individual, help defense from individuals, looking at how offenses are ran. I just think it’s important. I’m not the biggest analytics person but I want to have some of it. What is the ATO success rate. You may get to a position and you present all this, and that person is still like ‘But that don’t matter, this is my decision’. But don’t mean you don’t prepare.

Rich Paul admitted he is not really into the analytics of the game and does not have to put in all the work, but he chooses to do so because analytics are very important in sports today. It has been revealed that multiple contenders are interested in signing LeBron James this year.
Several clubs have called in to check on James. Paul revealed that James wants to compete for a championship and that his priority is to be happy, as his fourth club could be the last of his illustrious career.
2026-27 campaign may not be LeBron James’ last year in the NBA
James will be 42 years old this year. While he may not have the same impact on both ends of the floor as he once did, he is still coming off a strong 2025-26 campaign. In 60 appearances, he averaged 20.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists and led the Lakers to the Western Conference Semifinals.

Paul hinted that James may still have a few more years ahead of him.
Who says this is going to be his last year? He’s had that (documentary crew) for the last 4 years. No one said this is going to be his last year. Also, once he got the green light from Savannah and Zhuri, you can do whatever you want to do….. I’ve heard from, the other day I said 10-12 teams, I counted today. Outside of one organization, maybe two. I’ve heard from every organization in the league.

James has shown that he can still play at a very high level when needed. It is a lot to ask from him to lead a team to a championship as the primary scorer and playmaker at his current age, but as a second option, he can provide a team with playoff experience and elite passing ability.
Rich Paul is doing the background work while LeBron James sits back
As Paul mentioned a few days ago, there have been 10-12 contending clubs that have contacted him since news about James leaving the Lakers became public. Paul also revealed that the New York Knicks contacted him as well, but they are off the table after winning the championship this year.
NBA insider Chris Haynes revealed that James is not attending any of the meetings, while Paul does all the background work.
As of right now there are no plans for LeBron to engage in any meetings to allow teams to pitch him on the idea of coming to their prospective teams…his agent Paul is doing all the background work. He’s talking with teams and then he in return he will relay all the intel and data to LeBron James in which LeBron will make a decision.

James is likely to play for more than one year. Several clubs will be eager to sign him as they look to contend for a championship next year.
