Karolina Muchova has now reached her career’s second Grand Slam final by upsetting Coco Gauff in the Wimbledon semifinals, which they played on Thursday (July 9). Toward the end, it was anyone’s match.

In a nail-biting semifinal, the Czech ace clinched a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(12-10) win to progress to her first Wimbledon final. Gauff held a 6-1 head-to-head lead over Muchova before this match. It was her second consecutive defeat to Muchova, who won their clash in the quarterfinals of the Stuttgart Open and later reached the final, only to lose to World No. 2 Elena Rybakina.

Gauff, the winner of 11 singles titles from 16 finals, was hoping to reach a final on grass for the first time in her career. At Wimbledon, the two-time Grand Slam singles champion had never progressed beyond the fourth round before this year.

Prior to knocking out Gauff, Muchova ended four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka‘s run in the quarterfinals. Since 2021, Muchova had never made it past the first round at SW19. In 2021, also her second appearance in the tournament, Muchova exited after making the quarterfinals.

Before Wimbledon, she reached her career’s first Grand Slam final at the 2023 French Open but failed to beat Iga Swiatek, who played this event as the defending champion, losing to Alexandra Eala in the third round.

Before her defeat to Rybakina in Stuttgart, Muchova clinched her first title of the season at the Qatar Open by defeating Victoria Mboko. Reacting to her latest win, Muchova said this during her on-court interview:

First of all, it sounds really nice to be in the final. it was such a big fight. It was a rollercoaster. You’re up and down. In 10 seconds, you have match point, and you’re match point down. No time to think. But very nerve-wracking. I don’t know. I don’t even know what I’m saying. I’m really kind of shaking and trying to sink it in. The atmosphere is indescribable.

Muchova will face countrywoman Linda Noskova next. Noskova will be playing a Major final for the first time in her career. In the last four, she downed Marta Kostyuk.

There are so many of us tennis players. I don’t think many of us get the chance to play on this court. It’s such a history of our sport. It’s incredible. Very special moment. We came here to warm up with Linda before the semis. We took a photo. It’s a nice moment to experience all of this. This court is beautiful.

Karolina Muchova added

Muchova faced Noskova just once and won that match. They played in the third round of last year’s US Open. Before this event, Noskova had made just one Grand Slam quarterfinal (at the 2024 Australian Open). The 21-year-old is chasing her second title of the season following the Berlin Open.
