When fans look up to a sporting champion, some of the qualities they admire most are humility, grace, and class. Many, however, find it difficult to associate those traits with World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. While the four-time Grand Slam champion has established herself as one of the most dominant forces on the WTA Tour, her attitude has often made it difficult for some tennis fans to embrace her.

Her on-court meltdowns, visible frustrations, and controversial press comments, coupled with an ostentatious off-court persona, can be off-putting to some fans. It stands in stark contrast to other top female players such as Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina, whose calm, humble, and understated demeanor have made them particularly inspiring and relatable to many. The 28-year-old recently made a TikTok video in response to her critics:

Waking up to comments that say I care more about TikTok than tennis, that I don’t deserve to be the world number one, and that I need to fix my attitude.

A few weeks ago, Sabalenka suggested that people perhaps perceive her as a “b*tch” because of her Slavic facial features. The comment did not sit well with many fans, who believe that the label has less to do with her ethnicity and more to do with her personality.

Following her fourth-round exit at Wimbledon, Sabalenka remarked that it was time for her to get “completely drunk, forget about tennis, and try to get in better shape.” To many, mentioning “getting completely drunk” and “getting in better shape” in the same breath came across as contradictory, while others criticized her for seemingly promoting an unhealthy way of coping with disappointment.

Time and again, Sabalenka has made comments or displayed behavior that has drawn criticism, leaving some fans finding her difficult to relate to or admire.

Aryna Sabalenka will next play at the Canadian Open

Aryna Sabalenka lost her Wimbledon fourth-round match against Naomi Osaka in straight sets. This marked her earliest exit at a Grand Slam since the 2022 Roland Garros. The Wimbledon final will now be contested by two first-time finalists, Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova, marking an all-Czech final. This will be Muchova’s second Grand Slam final and Noskova’s first.

A significant impact on Sabalenka’s exit can be seen on the WTA ranking points. Sabalenka has now dropped to 8550 points, narrowing the gap with World No. 2 Elena Rybakina, who is at 8143 points. Rybakina is just 407 points behind Sabalenka now and has a huge opportunity to leapfrog her and reach the World No. 1 ranking for the first time in her career.

The Belarusian, who last year, after her Wimbledon semifinal run, chose to skip the Canadian Open, will be playing the tournament this year. Several top WTA players will be competing in Toronto, including Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, Mirra Andreeva and Coco Gauff. However, World No. 12 and defending champion Victoria Mboko will miss the tournament.

Mboko has been sidelined after sustaining an injury at Queen’s Club that ruled her out for the remainder of the grass-court swing. Sabalenka had a successful hard-court swing in the first half of the season. She won titles in Brisbane, Indian Wells and Miami and finished runner-up at the Australian Open. After an inconsistent clay-court and grass-court swing, perhaps she may now once again bounce back on her beloved hard courts.
