Conor McGregor returns at UFC 329 to face Max Holloway, nearly thirteen years after their first meeting. The Irishman has remained out of competition since suffering a leg-break loss at UFC 264. There is no doubt McGregor’s fight buildups consistently deliver unforgettable moments. The first UFC 329 faceoff continued that trend as McGregor and Holloway nearly came to blows before security stepped in.
Their first meeting took place at UFC Fight Night 26 in August 2013, during McGregor’s second UFC appearance against a rising Holloway. McGregor controlled much of the contest despite suffering a serious knee injury during the fight. The Irish star earned a unanimous decision victory, while Holloway later developed into a dominant UFC featherweight champion and a BMF titleholder.
During the first UFC 329 faceoff, McGregor grabbed Holloway’s Meta glasses and slammed them to the ground, immediately escalating tensions. The former champions then went forehead-to-forehead before McGregor slapped Holloway’s hands away, forcing security to intervene. The Hawaiian star later shared footage captured with Meta glasses on his social media, offering his perspective on the confrontation.

There was little bad blood between McGregor and Holloway before the UFC 329 promotion began. Their rivalry intensified following their joint UFC Freedom 250 interview, with both fighters exchanging verbal shots. Since then, the Irishman has maintained that Holloway will not be able to lay a glove on him.
McGregor believes he is fully prepared for his UFC return and expects to deliver a masterpiece against Holloway. After nearly five years away, the former two-division champion insists he is ready for the challenge ahead. UFC 329 now offers him the opportunity to prove those claims in the Octagon.
Holloway has embraced a more outspoken approach during the buildup, drawing comparisons to McGregor’s promotional style. The former BMF champion has traded shots while matching the Irishman’s intensity. Their evolving dynamic has added another layer to one of the year’s biggest UFC events.
Holloway has also targeted surpassing UFC 300 at UFC 329, where he knocked out Justin Gaethje in the final second to win the BMF title. The Hawaiian veteran believes his rematch with McGregor could produce an even bigger finish. That goal has added further significance to their long-awaited rematch.
Conor McGregor has once again embraced his trademark ‘Notorious’ persona heading into UFC 329. That was evident during the explosive first faceoff with Max Holloway. It now remains to be seen whether the heated buildup carries over when they finally meet in the Octagon on July 11th at the T-Mobile Arena.
Conor McGregor reveals plans to make history after UFC 329
Conor McGregor remains one of the UFC’s most accomplished fighters, becoming the promotion’s first simultaneous two-division champion. He captured the featherweight title with a 13-second knockout of Jose Aldo at UFC 194. McGregor then stopped Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 to win the lightweight title.
Those victories made McGregor the first fighter to simultaneously hold UFC titles in two weight classes without relinquishing either belt. He achieved the historic feat by defeating Alvarez less than one year after capturing the featherweight championship, cementing one of the promotion’s defining milestones.

However, simultaneous two-division champions have become increasingly rare as the UFC has moved away from allowing champions to hold two active belts. Islam Makhachev became the latest and eleventh two-division champion after defeating Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 to win the welterweight title.
McGregor last competed in the UFC in 2021, suffering a leg-break defeat. The Irishman now returns against Max Holloway at the welterweight limit at UFC 329. He has already targeted Makhachev and has now doubled down on those ambitions, aiming to become the UFC’s first-ever three-division champion.

Alex Pereira already became the first UFC fighter to challenge for a title in a third weight class at UFC Freedom 250. However, his bid ended in a controversial knockout loss. Conor McGregor now hopes to succeed where ‘Poatan’ fell short by becoming the UFC’s first-ever three-division champion.
