Anthony Volpe has found himself under backlash from fans once again following his performances this season. A sportscaster has urged the New York Yankees to part ways with him after Derek Jeter came to his defense recently.

Jeter, the former Yankees captain, spent his entire MLB career in New York. His performances at the shortstop position made him one of the best infielders in the history of the game.

At the moment, Volpe plays as the shortstop of the Yankees. With him being a New Yorker and a fan of Jeter, the pressure is even more on him to deliver.

In recent seasons, Volpe has made several errors. This year, he made his first appearance in May after returning from an injury. In his very first game back in the pinstripes, the 25-year-old committed an error in the infield.

While the mistake did not cost the Yankees the game, as they won 7-0, it once again raised eyebrows regarding his fielding. Apart from that, he has also struggled at the plate this season.

In 45 games, Volpe has just 1 home run to his name. He has a slash line of .246/.342/.326 with just 13 RBIs.

Derek Jeter recently spoke with Adam Schein on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio. During their conversation, the MLB Hall of Famer expressed that every player goes through a slump, with most of them coming in the minor leagues. Jeter also claimed that the Yankees were committed to allowing Volpe to develop on the major league level.

Every player has gone through bumps in the road. Most of the time, those bumps happen in the minor leagues. … They’re committed to allowing him to continue developing at the major league level. … The Yankees are very high on Anthony. I don’t personally know him that well, but they’re banking on his upside.

On Post Sports Schein Time, Adam Schein once again blasted Volpe for his performances on the field this season.

He can’t hit. He can’t field. He can’t run, and he has no fundamentals and does some of the most insane things.

He then urged the Yankees to cut ties with him and move on.

You can’t function with Anthony Volpe. You can’t because the players in the clubhouse know … Volpe is everything wrong with the New York Yankees, and that’s a problem. So I think it’s incumbent upon the Yankees to get rid of him so they could move on.

Schein later added that the Yankees are still the team to beat in the American League. The Bronx Bombers ended the first half of the season with a 54-42 record after sweeping the Washington Nationals. They are 3 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays, who lead the AL East division with a 56-38 record.

Are the Yankees trying to move Anthony Volpe to a different position?

There is no denying that Anthony Volpe has struggled at the shortstop position in recent seasons. Last year, he had a -6 Outs Above Average (OAA), the second-worst of any New York Yankees star. With him having a hard time once again, some wonder whether the team could move him to a different position.

Recently, reports claimed that Volpe, the former first-round draft pick, had declined to move from his shortstop position. According to YES Network broadcaster and ESPN New York radio host Michael Kay, Volpe had refused to take reps for second base while claiming that he was a shortstop.

The right-handed hitter later denied these reports and called it “B.S.” Kay would also retract his comments and apologize for them. The veteran admitted that he was “wrong” about this and felt bad.

So for now, Volpe will likely remain as a shortstop. However, he is not a guaranteed starter. He started just 1 game in the crucial 4-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays, with Jose Caballero getting the nod.

With prospect George Lombard Jr. returning from an injury, there is a chance that the team could call him up and use him as the shortstop instead of Volpe. Only time will tell what happens next.
