LeBron James gave Tyrese Haliburton a humorous response after the Indiana Pacers guard attempted to recruit him in free agency, with the exchange becoming one of the highlights of a live taping of the Mind the Game podcast at Fanatics Fest in New York on July 17.
Haliburton, who filled in as guest co host while Steve Nash was absent, revealed that he had texted James about a month earlier, before the four time NBA champion made his decision to leave the Los Angeles Lakers. The Pacers star hoped to convince James to join him in Indiana, but his recruitment effort was quickly shut down.
I texted Bron, maybe a month ago, before he even made his decision to leave L.A. I said, ‘Hey, you want to come to Indiana, we can make something crack.’ And he texted me back with two laughing cry faces, and that’s all I got. I decided from that on, I’m done pursuing him in free agency.

Later during the live show, Haliburton also tried to get James to reveal where he plans to play next season. However, after James declined to answer, the Pacers guard immediately dropped the subject and joked that there was “No decision yet.”
James did not announce his next destination during the event. Instead, he spoke generally about free agency and reflected on the next phase of his NBA career without confirming which franchise he will join.
The appearance came amid widespread speculation surrounding James’ future after ending his eight season stint with the Lakers. Several teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat, have been linked with the veteran forward, although no official decision has been announced.
Indiana Pacers prepare for Tyrese Haliburton’s return following busy offseason
While LeBron James remains the biggest name in free agency, the Indiana Pacers are focused on welcoming Tyrese Haliburton back after he missed the entire 2025 and 2026 seasons because of the Achilles injury he suffered during Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals.

The Pacers have reshaped their roster since reaching the Finals. They acquired center Ivica Zubac from the Los Angeles Clippers and signed Kelly Oubre Jr., Larry Nance Jr. and Kobe Brown during free agency. Myles Turner left for the Milwaukee Bucks, while Bennedict Mathurin is also no longer with the team.
Haliburton is expected to return alongside Pascal Siakam, Andrew Nembhard, Aaron Nesmith and Obi Toppin as Indiana begins the 2026 and 2027 season. James, meanwhile, remains unsigned, with his free agency decision continuing to be one of the NBA’s biggest offseason storylines.
