Merab Dvalishvili built one of the most dominant runs in UFC bantamweight history, winning 14 straight fights and holding a strong championship reign. However, that run ended at UFC 323 after Dvalishvili lost to former rival Petr Yan. The Georgian superstar has also not always been in the UFC’s best books and recently slipped during a lie detector test after being flagged for a statement.
Dvalishvili climbed through local promotions before joining the Serra Longo gym, led by Matt Serra and Ray Longo. The Georgian endured a difficult UFC start, losing his first two fights against Frankie Saenz and Ricky Simon. Dvalishvili lost a decision to Saenz before suffering a submission defeat against Simon.
Dvalishvili captured the title and defended it three times in one year before losing his fourth defense to Yan at UFC 323. The former champion is awaiting his next fight and recently appeared in a lie detector test with Aviator. After denying that the UFC treated him unfairly, the test flagged his answer before Dvalishvili admitted it to some extent.

Syndicate MMA coach John Wood stated that the UFC was initially against the Georgian’s championship dreams. Wood explained that Dvalishvili had to work hard and change his fighting style to earn the promotion’s support. His evolution helped him rise from early struggles to become bantamweight champion.
There were also doubts about Dvalishvili receiving a title shot after the UFC booked him against Henry Cejudo at UFC 298. Despite being the top contender, Dvalishvili was passed over when Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera received a title fight against then-champion Sean O’Malley at UFC 292.
The Tbilisi native was also criticized by UFC CEO Dana White for not wanting to fight his teammate and close friend Aljamain Sterling for the title. Both fighters stood firm in their stance before Sterling eventually lost the belt to O’Malley at UFC 292. The situation created further tension between Dvalishvili and the promotion.
Sterling has also experienced difficult moments with the UFC, including before UFC 292. The Jamaican-American star was recovering from an undisclosed injury before facing ‘Suga’. A later UFC documentary showed Hunter Campbell’s involvement in discussions that pushed Sterling toward accepting the fight, which ended with him losing the title.
Merab Dvalishvili is now working toward his return after losing the bantamweight title and is dealing with a broken nose. The former champion has also appeared under the RAF banner, most recently defeating Henry Cejudo at RAF Georgia. ‘The Machine’ undoubtedly remains focused on returning to the title picture.
Merab Dvalishvili takes shots at former rival during lie detector test
Merab Dvalishvili faced Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC 311 in a highly anticipated bantamweight title fight. Dvalishvili survived Nurmagomedov’s early pressure and used his relentless pace to secure a unanimous decision victory. The win marked his first successful title defense and extended his dominant run.
Dvalishvili believed Nurmagomedov made their rivalry unnecessarily personal before their UFC 311 title fight. The Georgian stated that the young Dagestani fighter was influenced by his cousins to develop a heated rivalry. Dvalishvili felt the tension grew beyond normal competition between two elite bantamweights.

Dvalishvili has continued expressing frustration toward Nurmagomedov since UFC 311 and has targeted him on social media. During the Aviator lie detector test, he was asked if there was a fighter he could not stand and never wanted to see again. The former champion indirectly aimed at the ‘Young Eagle’.
Yes, there is a fighter. I hate him. He’s a little spoiled baby.

Merab Dvalishvili and Nurmagomedov’s rivalry continued creating headlines after UFC 311. The Dagestani fighter has indicated interest in rematching the former champion.
The tension escalated at RAF Georgia when ‘The Machine’ was involved in a scuffle with members of Nurmagomedov’s circle following his comments about the Dagestani fighter. The incident showed that the rivalry remains personal.
