Ben Shelton is in Washington for the Citi Open. Also in the American capital, Washington Spirit locked horns with Denver Summit in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) on Sunday (July 26). Washington won the match, thanks to Sofia Cantore‘s goal in the 61st minute.
Shelton’s girlfriend, Trinity Rodman, represents the Washington Spirit. Shelton was at Audi Field to support his girlfriend, and his reactions to Rodman and her team’s performances have gone viral.
At one point during the match, the ATP ace tried to catch a stray ball, but alas, he couldn’t. And while attempting the catch, he lost his balance.

Shelton, in his first-round match at the Citi Open, will lock horns with Martin Damm Jr. He has never reached the final of his home ATP 500 event.
Shelton was last seen in action at Wimbledon, where he suffered a shock first-round defeat at the hands of Otto Virtanen. Even though he has played just one quarterfinal in the Majors (Australian Open), he has made three finals so far this year, winning all.
Following his win over Taylor Fritz at the Dallas Open, Shelton clinched the BMW Open by defeating French Open runner-up Flavio Cobolli. He once again beat his compatriot Fritz, this time in the Stuttgart Open final. Shelton has so far won six singles titles from eight finals in his career.
Ben Shelton analyzes his 2026 season
As mentioned already, Ben Shelton suffered early exits in important tournaments but also won titles. In the Masters 1000s, he failed to progress beyond the third round. Shelton, in fact, reached the third round just once, at the Indian Wells Masters.

It’s been a weird season for me this year. A lot of highs, a lot of lows. I’ve won more titles than I’ve ever won in a year. Only halfway done with the year. At the same time, there are so many things that I’ve been frustrated about, disappointed with in my game. I think that there’s a lot of room for improvement in the second half of the year. I’m somebody who tries to be consistent, I try to be consistent with the way I train, the way I live, how I go about my day-to-day life.

Shelton has so far won just one Masters 1000 title. In last year’s Canadian Open, he beat Karen Khachanov to win his career’s biggest title.
I guess the inconsistency of my play is what I’ve been more frustrated about. One of my biggest goals on Tour is to get to the end of tournaments and finish off the week and win titles, which is a part that I didn’t have as much before, but I’m getting better and better at now. I think some of the frustration comes from those early-round exits that are kind of like the trap rounds for me. I think that being able to be more consistent week in and week out in those situations is important for me.
Ben Shelton added
After the Citi Open, Shelton will be bidding to defend his title in Montreal. Next, he will play in Cincinnati, where his run last year ended in the quarterfinals. In Cincinnati, if Carlos Alcaraz plays, he will be playing as the defending champion (received the walkover from Jannik Sinner last year).
In Washington, defending champion Alex de Minaur is competing as the first seed, while Shelton received the wild card to play. If Shelton reaches the semifinals, he could lock horns with players such as Arthur Fils, Rafael Jodar, Matteo Arnaldi, or Lorenzo Musetti.
