The main draw of the Citi Open is underway at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington, D.C. It’s the first combined WTA and ATP event on the North American hardcourt swing.
The American swing starts after the conclusion of Wimbledon, where this year, Jannik Sinner defended his title with a four-set win over Alexander Zverev. On the women’s side, Linda Noskova clinched a three-set win over countrywoman Karolina Muchova to become the third Czech woman in four years to win the title at the All England Club.
But none of these players are competing at the Citi Open. Alex de Minaur is bidding to defend his title. Last year, he came from a set down to defeat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final. Leylah Fernandez is playing as the defending champion on the women’s side. She breezed past Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets.
The top eight seeds on the women’s side are: Jessica Pegula, Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka, Diana Shnaider, Kalinskaya, Madison Keys, Fernandez, and Emma Navarro. Pegula, Venus Williams, Sofia Kenin, and Qinwen Zheng were handed the wild cards. The five players who withdrew are Jaqueline Cristian, Iva Jovic, Marta Kostyuk, Jasmine Paolini, and Katerina Siniakova.
On the men’s side, the top eight seeds are: de Minaur, Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, Lorenzo Musetti, Learner Tien, Frances Tiafoe, Jakub Mensik, and Arthur Fils. The wild card entrants are Shelton, Jack Draper, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Kei Nishikori. Draper was forced to withdraw due to his persisting arm injury.
Daniil Medvedev was also scheduled to play, but he withdrew and was replaced by Terence Atmane. Felix Auger-Aliassime was replaced by Ethan Quinn. Auger-Aliassime, at Wimbledon, was on the verge of defeating Novak Djokovic, but he eventually lost the thrilling quarterfinal.

The last home champion was Sebastian Korda (2024). The player with the most titles in the tournament is tennis great Andre Agassi (five titles) and also holds the record for most match wins (44).
Top WTA players such as Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff, and Iga Swiatek will be back for the Canadian Open, which starts on August 2. Men’s World No.1 Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Montreal event, which means he has missed a chance to bid for the historic Golden Masters as he lifted the first five Masters 1000s of the season.
His arch-rival, Carlos Alcaraz, has not yet played since injuring his wrist during the first round of the Barcelona Open. Alcaraz, however, has put his name on the entry list for the Cincinnati Masters, where he received a walkover from Sinner last year.
Following the warm-up events, the tennis world will shift its focus toward the last Grand Slam event of the season, the US Open. Alcaraz, if he plays, will be competing as the defending champion. Sabalenka will be aiming to defend her title on the women’s side.
