Iga Swiatek is a tennis player, and a top one, which only means one thing: that she is on the move for 11 months. So whenever she gets some free time at her hands, she heads “somewhere warm with water” where she can swim.

At the moment, Swiatek is not competing on the North American swing, but is expected to be back for the Canadian Open. The Pole was last seen in action at Wimbledon, where she endured a disappointing campaign.

Swiatek broke down in tears after her tough win over Taylor Townsend in the first round before she crashed out with a straight-set defeat at the hands of Alexandra Eala, and this ended her title defense (she double-bageled Amanda Anisimova in last year’s Wimbledon final).

Swiatek did not waste much time in trading her racket for sea breezes. But even while vacationing, the six-time Grand Slam champion struggles to forget about tennis. During her appearance on Natalia Szymanczyk‘s podcast, Swiatek explained why she finds it hard to ignore tennis.

It really depends, because if there’s some important tournament, I’m super curious about how someone’s doing. For example, right now, when I was on vacation, Hubert was still playing at Wimbledon. It was hard for me to ignore it, so I kept checking the scores and was super curious about what would happen. But if there’s no tournament at all, it’s much easier.

There are moments when she doesn’t care at all about what’s happening on the tour or about her performance in certain events.

I think it depends on how much I cared about a particular tournament, and what stage I reached in it. If I lost in the third round, say, I just close that chapter. I know I need to reset and think about the future. But if I was losing in the quarterfinals or semifinals, I’m still curious about what happens in the next matches, and my head is still in the tournament until it’s over.

Swiatek has so far played just one semifinal this year. And it was at the Italian Open, where eventual champion Elina Svitolina ended her run.

Dominika Cibulkova thinks she understands what’s wrong with Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek has won just one title this year, and it didn’t come in a singles tournament. It was back in January that Swiatek clinched the United Cup with Poland, which marked their first victory in the tournament.

And since then, the 25-year-old has only struggled by her own high standards. She, in fact, lost two of her opening-round matches (in Miami and Bad Homburg). Even on the clay swing, the four-time Grand Slam champion, like last year, failed to reach a title match.

Former World No.4 Dominika Cibulkova said a lack of confidence is the main culprit behind Swiatek’s struggles.

So, I think when she’s there mentally, and when she’s ready, and when she’s tough and strong, there are not many players that can beat her. It’s all about confidence. Of course, you have to train hard and practice a lot, but yes, the confidence… if you are not in the right mood, you can lose the confidence in one match.

Dominika Cibulkova told Tennis365

Following the Canadian Open, Swiatek will be bidding to defend the Cincinnati Open, where last year, she beat Jasmine Paolini. The last time Swiatek won a title was at the 2025 Korea Open.

After Cincinnati, she will be chasing her second title at the US Open. Last year, her campaign ended in the quarterfinals with a straight-set defeat to eventual runner-up Amanda Anisimova.
