Director of Netflix Documentary Thinks Rafael Nadal Doesn’t Have Many Fans in America Because He Has ‘Anti-Michael Jordan Mentality’

Rafael Nadal initially was reluctant to do the Netflix documentary, Rafa, directed by Zach Heinzerling. But thanks to Nadal’s team, he agreed to shoot.
The documentary did not just show the side of Nadal as a tennis player but also as a family man and a normal person that fans don’t get to see often. Plus, there’s also a lot of Greek literature in the documentary, and it was because Heinzerling thinks “there’s a romanticism to Rafa’s story that is Homeric,” that his left foot was very Sisyphean and it was also his Achilles heel (he has Mueller-Weiss syndrome).
Also, Heinzerling believes Nadal “lives almost in the gladiator era, the Roman times,” calling this mentality strange. The tennis world is well aware of Nadal playing through injuries and excruciating pain throughout most of his career.
But to play a sport and suffer so much is not a popular opinion of the world today, feels Heinzerling. This is one of the reasons why Nadal is not very popular among American fans. That his mentality is not like the one basketball legend Michael Jordan carried.
A lot of Americans will say that Michael Jordan is the greatest athlete of all time. Well, Michael Jordan lived with this form of confidence — he always thought, I’m gonna win, and that confidence led him to being better.
Zach Heinzerling said during his interview with CLAY
Between 2005 and 2022, the Spaniard missed 15 Grand Slam events because of injuries. Nadal’s career was all about overcoming injuries.
Nadal has kind of the opposite approach: I don’t think I’m gonna win. I actually think I might lose, and I’m going to give a lot of respect to my opponent and assume that he’s gonna play well so that I raise my game. There’s something about that mentality that’s like the anti-Jordan — the inverse of the common American way — that I found really interesting.

Rafa has been nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.
Zach Heinzerling reveals even he didn’t know much about Rafael Nadal
During that interview with CLAY, Zach Heinzerling opened up about how it felt working at a deep and intimate level with Rafael Nadal. Heinzerling said everyone who worked on the project was enamored by the 22-time Grand Slam champion’s personality and that he works like a samurai.

But before working on the project, even the American did not know much about the former World No.1.
I wasn’t even a fan of Rafa’s when I started. I liked tennis, but in the US, no one really knows Rafa. They know him because he won a lot of tournaments, the US Open four times… but there aren’t many Rafa fans because it’s hard to get to know him — he doesn’t really speak English that well. But as soon as you’re around him, there’s something about him that makes you sympathize immediately and root for him.

Nadal suffered a career-threatening hip injury during the 2023 Australian Open and missed the remainder of the season. Although he returned the next year in Brisbane, an abdomen injury forced him to miss a few more events.
He then finally made his comeback at the Barcelona Open and went on to feature in a few more clay-court events, including at the French Open, where the 14-time champion suffered an opening-round defeat at the hands of eventual runner-up Alexander Zverev.
Nadal also competed at the Paris Olympics and lost in the second round to eventual champion Novak Djokovic. In his career’s last final, Nadal lost to Nuno Borges at the Nordea Open.
