Iga Swiatek has finally taken her revenge over Marta Kostyuk. It was the Ukrainian ace who upset the four-time French Open champion in the fourth round of this year’s Roland Garros.

But in their next meeting, in the last 16 match in the ongoing Canadian Open, the Pole came from a set down to clinch a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win, improving their head-to-head record to 4-1.

In the first set, I should have taken more risks on some shots. In the second, I came out on court more boldly and took advantage of my opportunities, playing a little faster and with more power, putting a little more pressure on Marta. I knew I could maintain consistency by doing so. My serve speed wasn’t enough at first, even though she was still returning very well. I didn’t want to blame myself. In the second and third sets, I managed to improve that.

Iga Swiatek said at the press conference

Kostyuk is a one-time quarterfinalist at the Canadian Open, reaching the stage last year. She is also a one-time champion at the WTA 1000 level, winning this year’s Madrid Open.

I was really proud of myself and happy with my performance at the end of the match. It was an intense match. Even though the score wasn’t that close, we fought for every point. There weren’t many easy points. And if one of us made mistakes, it was because the other was putting pressure on us. It’s not that we played badly or anything like that. I’m happy that I was the more consistent player and that I improved my game until the end.

Iga Swiatek added

Kostyuk has played three finals this year, winning the Open de Rouen by beating Veronika Podrez and the Madrid Open by beating Mirra Andreeva. She lost the Brisbane International final to Aryna Sabalenka.

Iga Swiatek will face Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open

Iga Swiatek will next be up against a player who ended World No.3 Jessica Pegula‘s run in the fourth round. It’s 15th seed Diana Shnaider who trails 0-1 in the head-to-head matchups versus the six-time Grand Slam champion, having lost their clash in the fourth round of last year’s Madrid Open.

During the Shnaider versus Pegula match, the Russian ace broke the American four times out of the seven chances she created. Breaking Pegula was the key to the win, believes Shnaider.

I feel like breaking Jess’s serve was, that was not on my list today. I was super happy with my returns. I think a little bit with my return positions, I discussed a little bit with Sascha [Bajin], like mid-match, so it helped staying a little bit more back.

Diana Shnaider said at the press conference

Shnaider clinched her career’s first win over the 2024 US Open runner-up after four back-to-back defeats. The 22-year-old is a one-time semifinalist at the Canadian Open, reaching the stage on her debut back in 2024.

It was also her best performance in a WTA 1000 event. Shnaider last reached a final at the 2025 Monterrey Open, winning the title by beating Ekaterina Alexandrova. Swiatek, on the other hand, last clinched a trophy at the 2025 Korea Open. Since that win, she has yet to reach another tour-level final.

Last year, Swiatek played four finals, winning titles at Wimbledon, Cincinnati Masters, and the Korea Open. She lost the Bad Homburg Open to Pegula (also her career’s first final on grass). Before arriving in Toronto, Swiatek played at Wimbledon, where her run ended at the hands of Alexandra Eala in the third round. And this made Eala the first Filipino to reach the fourth round of a Major.
