Ben Shelton found another person to cheer for him from the stands of IGA Stadium’s Centre Court. And it was none other than his girlfriend, Trinity Rodman, the soccer star who plays for Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League.

She paid the unexpected visit ahead of the blockbuster match against Joao Fonseca in the fourth round of the Canadian Open. Rodman uploaded a clip of Shelton’s reaction on her Instagram.

In the clip, Rodman knocks on the hotel door, and after a few seconds Shelton opens it. The moment Shelton saw who the visitor was, he stood stunned with a half-open mouth, before closing the door in her face.

Rodman, who laughed a lot seeing his reaction, requested that he let her enter, and when Shelton opened it this time, he stood there smiling, still in disbelief. His girlfriend then wished him a “happy matchday.”

Surprised his ( ). Happy matchday in Montréal @benshelton. He thought I just slept in.

In the Fonseca match, Shelton clinched a 6-3, 7-6(3) win, improving his head-to-head record to 2-0. Rodman was impressed when the fifth seed won a rally with a stunning cross-court forehand.

Before this match, Shelton and Fonseca met in the quarterfinals of this year’s Munich Open, which the World No.10 won later by defeating Flavio Cobolli in the final. The Frenchman was also in the stands watching the match.

The defending champion will next be facing Jakub Mensik, who went past Botic van de Zandschulp. The American ace holds a 1-2 head-to-head record against the Czech ace. They last met in the third round of last year’s Madrid Open.

Shelton is chasing his fourth title of the season. Apart from his Munich win, Shelton lifted the Dallas Open and the Stuttgart Open by beating compatriot Taylor Fritz.

Ben Shelton on his match against Joao Fonseca

Joao Fonseca was bidding to reach the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open for the first time. He suffered an opening-round defeat on his debut last year.

The 19-year-old, in fact, was aiming to reach the last eight of a Masters 1000 tournament for the second time, following this year’s Monte-Carlo Masters. Although Ben Shelton wrapped up the match in straight sets, he admitted that the windy conditions made it tough for him to face someone like the Brazilian ace.

It was tough out there today, and I competed well. It wasn’t easy conditions to play in. I struggled to find my footing on a lot of balls, as did he. A lot of it just comes down to grit in a match like this. So to come through with a win against a really high-quality player like Joao is huge for me.

Ben Shelton said after the match (H/T: ATP Tour)

Fonseca has so far clinched two tour-level singles titles, both last year. After beating home favorite Francisco Cerundolo at the Argentina Open, he went past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Swiss Indoors.

For me, it’s about playing aggressive tennis. I look to try to get to the net and be aggressive and take the time away. I thought I did a great job of that in the tie-break today, came up with clutch volleys, and ultimately that’s what made me win tonight.

The only Masters 1000 title that Shelton lifted was last year’s Canadian Open by defeating Karen Khachanov. Before this tournament, Shelton had failed to advance past the third round of a Masters 1000 tournament, reaching the third round just once, at the Indian Wells Masters.
