Carlos Prates has repeatedly pushed for a UFC welterweight title shot, especially after UFC 330. The Brazilian believes he presents the toughest matchup for Islam Makhachev because of his striking and knockout power. He sees his style creating problems for the champion, who relied on wrestling and grappling against Ian Garry.
Prates first made a major impact in the welterweight division at UFC 319 with a highlight-reel knockout against Geoff Neal. The Brazilian landed a spinning elbow that stopped Neal and strengthened his position among the contenders. He followed that by knocking out former champion Leon Edwards at UFC 322.
‘The Nightmare’ most recently knocked out former champion Jack Della Maddalena at UFC Perth, securing the No. 2 spot in the rankings. Since then, he has remained in title-shot consideration and intensified his push after UFC 330. Prates has now revealed he signed an eight-fight UFC contract and is ready to challenge the champion.
I’m the next for the title. I think [Morales] gonna fight maybe Belal Muhammad, or another fighter. But he needs to fight one more.

Prates has now warned Makhachev following his lackluster title defense against Garry at UFC 330. The Brazilian knockout artist believes he can knock out the champion if they meet for the welterweight title. Prates’ confidence has majorly grown as he continues pushing for the opportunity against the Dagestani superstar.
Michael Morales has also emerged as a major name in the welterweight title race after knocking out Sean Brady at UFC 322. The victory strengthened his case, and the Ecuadorian star has called for a title shot ever since. He also served as the backup fighter for the UFC 330 welterweight title bout.
The title race intensified at UFC 330 when Prates and Morales met in the crowd after Makhachev’s victory. The contenders argued over who deserved the next title opportunity, highlighting the competition for the championship. However, Makhachev later questioned why they had not fought to determine the division’s top contender.
Interestingly, Makhachev had already identified Prates as a major challenge while discussing his second title defense. The champion was open to facing the Brazilian star before his matchup with Garry was announced. Prates had therefore already emerged as a potential challenger before UFC 330.
There is little doubt Carlos Prates has a strong case for the next title shot, given the interest from both sides. However, Morales could have a compelling option against Ian Garry after their tense backstage confrontation at UFC 330. The Irishman confronted Morales backstage at UFC 330 adding another potential matchup to the title picture.
Carlos Prates admits his party lifestyle is finally catching up with him
Carlos Prates has one of the most unusual lifestyles among MMA fighters, openly embracing habits many professionals avoid. The Brazilian is often seen smoking cigarettes, drinking whisky, and partying despite competing professionally. He has previously revealed smoking around 10 to 15 cigarettes daily.
Prates has also previously discussed his interest in training with UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, he admitted he would hesitate because the former champion follows a strict training regimen. Prates believes Nurmagomedov would not allow him to smoke or party while training under his guidance.

At 33 years old, Prates is entering the most important phase of his MMA career with a potential title fight ahead.
The Brazilian star will need complete focus as his next appearance could determine his chance at UFC gold. That makes his recent admission about feeling tired of partying particularly notable.
I like partying, but to be honest, the last month, I’m a little bit tired of this. I think I need to rest a little bit. I’m getting old… so I’m getting a little bit tired of party. I need to think about before I go to party and things like that. Going out and having a hangover [is one thing], but I’m still drinking, still smoking at home with my friends.

Islam Makhachev is known for his disciplined approach, making Prates’ lifestyle a sharp contrast between the two contenders.
The champion was reportedly surprised after seeing ‘The Nightmare’ eat Nutella cake during the UFC 322 buildup. Their differing training regimens could make a potential matchup especially intriguing.
