Controversy struck on Thursday night when the Los Angeles Sparks and Atlanta Dream faced off against each other. The game was halted as a fan threw a toy onto the court. The fan was caught immediately and arrested for his actions.

While many would have hoped it was an isolated incident, their hopes came crashing down when multiple toys were thrown during Friday night’s matchup between the Chicago Sky and Golden State Valkyries at Wintrust Arena. The game was interrupted in the third quarter, and it marked the second incident of its kind in the WNBA in two days.

As objects and toys were thrown onto the court, the officials immediately halted the game and called security personnel. The toys thrown were questionable and disturbing.

Following the game, Natasha Cloud did not mince her words as she addressed the incidents.

Y’all lame. In most of these occasions, it’s men. I’m a firm believer in anyone who has so much problem with a certain marginalized group. Just come out and say that you’re a part of our marginalized group because that hate is unwarranted. It’s not factual, and it says more about the internal struggles of that individual than it ever will say about the collective group.

Natasha Cloud is a vocal figure and never minces her words. The WNBA has been struck with a number of controversies over the last few weeks. The league has been caught in a precarious position when it comes to the participation of transgender athletes in the WNBA after two former NBA players declared themselves eligible for the WNBA draft.

However, objects and toys have been thrown onto the court before. Last season, a number of incidents took place where fans threw questionable toys and halted play.

Fans have been charged and the WNBA have been trying to work with law enforcement. Unfortunately, these disturbing incidents have started to occur again this year.

Cecilia Zandalasini spoke about the incident during the Sky-Valkyries game

It is never easy for the players after experiencing such actions from their fans in the stands. While hooliganism is common in professional sports, such acts are definitely not welcome and need to be dealt with. The incident occurred while the ball was in play; hence, the objects thrown could have struck a player, and things could have gotten a lot worse.

After the game, Valkyries forward Cecilia Zandalasini shared her thoughts on the incident.

I mean, first of all, it was super dangerous. And then when we found out what it was, I guess we just started laughing. I’ve never seen anything like that. I’m just glad we worked through that situation. We stayed locked in. We stayed concentrated.

It remains to be known if all the culprits have been identified and arrested. It is a cause for concern for the WNBA as such acts are becoming more and more frequent. A game between the same two teams last year also saw a similar toy thrown onto the court. Last season, members of a meme-coin group claimed responsibility for the incidents.

Natasha Cloud and Chicago Sky ended up winning the game after play resumed

The Sky started the game on the front foot. They looked dominant on both sides of the court and took a five-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Their dominance continued as they extended their lead to 12 points at halftime.

However, the third quarter offered a lot of twists and controversy. Play was halted for a few minutes as the personnel picked up the toys, but the Valkyries mounted a comeback and outscored the home side 25-11 in the third quarter.

In the end, the Sky held their nerve and clinched a closely fought 73-70 win. They improved their record to 15-22 and registered their third straight win as they sit in 10th place in the table. Cloud led the scorers for Sky with 17 points, and three teammates also recorded double-digit points. It was an impressive victory, but unfortunately, the incident grabbed the headlines.

Meanwhile, the Valkyries suffered their second consecutive loss and are now five games behind top seed, Minnesota Lynx. The Valkyries have already sealed their place in the playoffs as they sit at second place in the standings.
