Tennis legend Andre Agassi has called Carlos Alcaraz a blend of the Big 3 (Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic). The Spaniard is marking his return from a wrist injury at the US Open. This hiatus has made him skip Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

The Big 3 themselves have never hidden their appreciation for Alcaraz. Agassi had similar sentiments during his on-screen presence in Djokovic’s documentary. Agassi said in Novak Djokovic’s documentary:

Novak, Roger and Rafa played this game all so differently, and all so great in their own way. And now you see players, specifically Alcaraz, that plays like all three of them whenever he wants. The game does get better.

Alcaraz is already drawing comparisons with the Big 3 despite being only 23. He has 7 Grand Slams and has already achieved the Career Grand Slam. Moreover, he has won 8 Masters 1000 titles.

The Big 3 era is on the verge of finishing, with two of the three members (Federer and Nadal) already retired. Djokovic is currently 39, and his age prevents him from being on tour as regularly as he was 3-4 years ago.

Carlos Alcaraz confirms US Open return

Carlos Alcaraz announced his official return to tennis, confirming that he will compete at the 2026 U.S. Open to defend his men’s singles title. The Spanish star has been sidelined for over four months due to a right wrist injury sustained during the Barcelona Open in April.

The injury forced the seven-time Grand Slam champion to miss major stretches of the season, including the French Open, Wimbledon, and the hard-court events in Toronto and Cincinnati. Despite the lengthy absence, he enters the tournament maintaining his No. 2 world ranking.

Alcaraz shared the news of his comeback on social media, posting a video alongside journalist Fabrizio Romano stating, “Estoy de vuelta [I’m back]. Here we go!” and echoing the phrase on X with an American flag emoji.

His return to Flushing Meadows will carry a dual spotlight, as he is also set to play mixed doubles alongside Serena Williams in what promises to be one of the most anticipated pairings of the tournament.

Serena Williams is set to make her return to the U.S. Open by teaming up with Carlos Alcaraz to form a blockbuster mixed doubles pair. The U.S. Tennis Association announced that the star duo has been granted a wild card into the tournament, with the mixed doubles main draw kicking off on Tuesday.

While Williams is not planning to play singles in New York, the tournament will mark her first appearance at Flushing Meadows since 2022. Alcaraz is also making his return to defend his U.S. Open singles title after being sidelined since April due to a wrist injury.

The mixed doubles tournament has been revamped by the USTA into a fast-paced, two-day, 16-team event designed to attract top singles players. The winning team will take home a shared prize of $1 million.

The star-studded field features other high-profile pairings, including Aryna Sabalenka with Novak Djokovic, Jessica Pegula with Taylor Fritz, and Iga Swiatek with Casper Ruud. Additionally, a qualifying tournament will determine the final spots in the revamped draw.
