The date August 23rd is significant for NBA fans since it was the day the late Kobe Bryant was born in 1978. If he were alive, he would be celebrating his 48th birthday with his family.

‘The Mamba’ was retired at the time of his death and was focused on helping his daughter, Gianna, develop as a basketball player. The then-13-year-old was hoping to be good enough to play for the UConn Huskies, her favorite college program.

It was on that fateful helicopter journey for a basketball game at the Mamba Sports Academy that the world lost both the Los Angeles Lakers great and his beloved Mambacita.

Many still hold the notion that had the five-time champion been alive, the basketball world may not have faced this much negativity and scrutiny. He was quiet enough to make his point, and loud when needed.

His legacy is such that those who met him still talk about him. Then those who haven’t believe that either they should follow his path of determination and motivation, or at least discuss his legacy.

That is why, to this day, NBA fans and celebrities who embraced the Mamba’s way have been in mourning. Those feelings tend to go through the roof whenever it is either the day of his passing or, as was today, his birthday.

Fans remember Kobe Bryant on his 48th birthday

On the eve of his birthday, the Los Angeles Lakers were the first to post about their late franchise cornerstone. It is no secret how much team governor Jeanie Buss adored Kobe Bryant, and the timing of this post reflected it.

So did posts from the likes of the great Magic Johnson and the Mamba’s millions of fans. They took to social media to either post on their own or react to those of the Lakers and other publications, examples of which are below.

Most of the fans believe that if Kobe Bryant were still alive, there was a chance that Jeanie Buss may have thought of a way to make him a minority owner of the Lakers before their eventual sale to Mark Walter. Others believe that his impact on other sports would have coincided with the tremendous growth of the WNBA, and probably as a team owner.

Barcelona pays homage to Kobe Bryant with custom jerseys

Apart from fans and other organizations who paid their respects to Kobe Bryant, soccer club FC Barcelona decided to do something that left a lasting impression on basketball fans.

The soccer giants kicked off their La Liga title defense with an away game against Elche CF. Since this match coincided with the NBA Hall of Famer’s birthday, Barcelona decided to pay homage in their own way.

They teamed up with Nike to create new jerseys bearing Bryant’s logo. Wearing those custom threads, the likes of World Cup 2026 superstar Lamine Yamal and his teammates went on to score five goals unanswered.

That was probably the most fitting tribute to the great Kobe Bryant, with soccer’s biggest stars from one of the biggest teams wearing his jersey to set the new La Liga season high in goals scored.
