On Sunday (August 30), all Emma Navarro needed was just six points to win her opening-round match in straight sets against Lois Boisson. But to her disappointment, the match was halted due to rain when she had a 4-2 lead.

The Frenchwoman fought back to level the score but couldn’t sustain the same level in the third set, eventually losing with a 7-6(6), 6-7(1), 6-3 scoreline. Frustration got the better of Boisson as she angrily smashed her racket after the defeat.

A contrasting scene was witnessed at that moment, because while Boisson was smashing her racket in the background, the home favorite joyfully celebrated her win.

Here’s the video:

I’m feeling great. As we saw there, I think I counted three fist pumps, maybe, which is about three more than I usually have, so I’m fired up… Triple pump. Well, it wasn’t a lawn mower or anything, [laughter] but I had one after the first set, couple after the match, so we’ll take it.

Emma Navarro told Tennis Channel

The American has improved her head-to-head lead over Boisson to 2-0. In their previous match, in the third round of last year’s China Open, Navarro was handed the walkover.

(When) I went home last night…I knew I had six points to win, and everyone’s telling me, get it done, finish it, you only gotta get six points. I’m just proud of my toughness. It’s not easy being that close and losing a tough set.

Emma Navarro said during her on-court interview

Navarro will next be locking horns with Caty McNally in an all-American second-round clash. McNally beat Anouk Koevermans in her first-round match.

Boisson, who reached last year’s French Open semifinal, made her appearance at the US Open for the second time in her career after her debut last year. In the Majors this season, Boisson skipped the Australian Open due to an injury problem, while at the French Open and Wimbledon, she failed to go past the first round. The 23-year-old has played just one tour-level final, last year’s Hamburg European Open, which she won by beating Anna Bondar.

Emma Navarro on her level at the US Open

Emma Navarro, who played her career’s first Grand Slam semifinal here in New York, lost in the early rounds of all the warm-up events she played before the US Open. But she is confident of having a better run in her home Slam.

Definitely, I think I have more in the tank. I have more in me. I don’t think I’m playing my best tennis that I can play, but I’m playing a level of tennis that I feel like can go far, and I feel good mentally, and I feel calm. I feel strong. And I feel just really good about my toughness and resilience. And those are all the things that I enjoy about playing tennis is it’s really tough mentally, but if I feel like I’m in a position to conquer the challenge, that’s when it gets really fun.

Emma Navarro told Tennis Channel

Navarro, however, did not make a deep run in the first three Majors of the season, losing in the first round of the Australian Open, second round of the French Open, and third round of Wimbledon.

So, yeah, I’m pumped to be here, and I love playing at the US Open in front of the Americans. It’s the best. So, yeah, I’m looking forward to playing another match here.

Emma Navarro added

If Navarro defeats Caty McNally, she will play Katie Boulter or this year’s Wimbledon runner-up Karolina Muchova in the third round. Navarro, a three-time singles title winner, has already played two finals this season, winning the Strasbourg Open and losing the Nottingham Open.
