Coco Gauff vs. Paula Badosa: Match Preview
Coco Gauff arrived at Flushing Meadows after a successful campaign at the Cincinnati Open, where she defeated countrywoman Jessica Pegula in the final to end her title drought. It was her first title since the 2025 Wuhan Open.

It was, however, Gauff’s third final of the season. She reached the championship matches of the Miami Open and the Italian Open, losing both to Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina, respectively. Before Cincinnati, Gauff competed at the Canadian Open and reached the semifinal, only to lose to eventual runner-up Elena Rybakina.
Gauff has a chance to reach her career-best ranking of No.1 if she wins the title. To become the top-ranked player, Gauff has to win the title and hope that World No.2 Rybakina loses before the semifinals.
Defending champion Sabalenka will only be able to maintain her spot after this US Open if she wins the title and the Kazakh ace loses before reaching the last four. At present, Gauff stands in fourth spot, while Pegula, also another contender to reach the No.1 ranking, stands in the third spot.
Paula Badosa, on the other hand, competed at the Hamburg Open before arriving in New York, where she reached the quarterfinals. Before Hamburg, Badosa competed at the WTA 250 Iasi Open and reached the final, but was forced to hand the walkover to Mayar Sherif. Badosa last lifted a title at the 2024 Citi Open. And since then, she has played just one final.
At the US Open, she has reached just one quarterfinal in 2024 and skipped the tournament last year. This year in Majors, she skipped the French Open, reached the second round of the Australian Open and suffered an opening-round exit at Wimbledon.
Coco Gauff vs. Paula Badosa: Match Prediction
Gauff is bidding to win her second title at the US Open. It was in her home Slam back in 2023 that the American lifted her career’s first Grand Slam title by defeating Sabalenka.

Last season, she reached her first Grand Slam final at the French Open but fell to Iga Swiatek. Gauff lifted her second singles Major at the French Open last year, defeating Sabalenka.
But this season in Grand Slam events, she has reached just one semifinal, at Wimbledon (for the first time). At the US Open last year, her campaign ended in the fourth round.
Badosa is a one-time Grand Slam semifinalist, reaching the stage in last year’s Australian Open after defeating Gauff in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard also won their last meeting in the round of 16 of this year’s Berlin Open, improving her head-to-head record to 5-3. But at present, the two-time Grand Slam singles champion has been in good form.
Match prediction: Coco Gauff to win in straight sets.
