Carlos Alcaraz vs. Tommy Paul: Match Preview
The US Open is Carlos Alcaraz’s first tournament since the Barcelona Open. He injured his wrist during the first-round match, which saw him miss quite a few events, including the French Open and Wimbledon.

Before the Barcelona Open, the former World No.1 lost his No.1 ranking to arch-rival Jannik Sinner after losing the Monte-Carlo Masters final. Prior to the clay swing, Alcaraz lost in the semifinal of Indian Wells to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev and in the third round of the Miami Open to Sebastian Korda.
But he kicked off his campaign for 2026 in a strong fashion, winning the Australian Open by beating Novak Djokovic and the Qatar Open by beating Arthur Fils. Alcaraz is chasing his third title of the season at Flushing Meadows.
The 23-year-old clinched his career’s first Grand Slam title in this tournament back in 2022 by defeating Casper Ruud. Last year, he defeated defending champion Sinner in the final.
Tommy Paul, on the other hand, has never made it past the fourth round of his home Slam. He progressed to the last 16 in 2023 and 2024, while last year, his run ended in the third round.
Paul is a one-time semifinalist in Majors, reaching the stage at the 2023 Australian Open. This year in Majors, he advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open and the third round of the French Open and Wimbledon.
So far this season, the 29-year-old has played four finals. He lost in Delray Beach to compatriot Sebastian Korda, then clinched the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships against Roman Andres Burruchaga, before losing the Hamburg Open to Ignacio Buse and the Queen’s Club Championships to Francisco Cerundolo.
Carlos Alcaraz vs. Tommy Paul: Match Prediction
This will be the third time Alcaraz and Paul will face each other in Majors, and the first time at the US Open. They have already met this year, in the fourth round of the Australian Open, which Alcaraz won.

The Murcia native, in fact, emerged victorious in their last five meetings. He holds a 6-2 head-to-head lead. Paul last defeated Alcaraz in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Canadian Open. The first win that the 29-year-old registered was in their first clash in the third round of the 2022 Canadian Open.
Even though Alcaraz did not have any match practice going into the US Open, there has been no sign of rust. Paul has already given him a warning that he wants to play nothing but his best tennis. In the absence of Sinner as well as the early exit of Djokovic, Alcaraz, following his strong performances, has once again become a heavy favorite to defend his crown.
Match prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in four sets.
