Dillon Brooks is coming off his best individual season in the NBA. He was drafted in the second round of the 2017 NBA draft and quickly made a name for himself as an instigator in the league. Many have labeled him a “villain” because of his physical style of play and his habit of getting under the skin of some of the best players.
He was traded to the Phoenix Suns from the Houston Rockets as part of the trade package for Kevin Durant. After Durant’s exit, there weren’t many expectations surrounding the Suns last season. Many predicted them to be a lottery team last season.
However, Brooks played a key role in leading the Suns to a seventh-place finish in the Western Conference standings with a 45-37 record. They beat the Golden State Warriors in the final game of the Play-In Tournament and reached the playoffs.
As players fine-tune their skills for the new season in the summer, Brooks decided to take a different approach. The Suns posted a video on their social media of his Kung Fu training during a trip to China this offseason.

While Devin Booker is the star player, Dillon Brooks was the leader of the Suns last season. They were one of the biggest surprises of the 2025-26 campaign, mainly because of their forward. Brooks has always been one of the top defenders in the league, but he elevated his game on the offensive end as he averaged a career-high 20.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and one steal last season.
His performances led many to believe that he deserved to be an All-Star last season. Unfortunately, he missed out and was not named in the All-Star Game.
Brooks was engaged in a number of feuds last season, especially with LeBron James. He has ruffled quite a few feathers over the last few years, but after his recent Kung Fu training in China, opponents will need to be a lot more careful in engaging in any sort of beef with him next season.
Fans react to Dillon Brooks learning Kung Fu in China
Dillon Brooks’ offseason approach is interesting. His decision to spend some time during the summer in China drew comparisons to Victor Wembanyama‘s China trip last year. The French star spent his summer in 2025 in a Shaolin Temple in Zhengzhou, China.
After a video of his Kung Fu training in China went viral, fans quickly reacted across social media.

Fans were left bemused by the video. Many believed that Dillon Brooks was taking Wembanyama’s route from last year. It will be interesting to see how much Brooks’ game changes next season. What makes it more interesting is that Brooks revealed that he has his eyes set on containing Wembanyama next season.
Dillon Brooks must find another level if the Suns want to contend
The Suns will look to be playoff contenders next season after impressing the NBA world last season. They made some good additions to their roster after trading for Miles Bridges and signing Luke Kennard as a free agent.

While they were one of the surprise packages last season as they reached the playoffs, they were clean swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round. They may still not be at par with the top teams in the Western Conference, but their recent acquisitions do make them a formidable side.
With Booker still their best player, Dillon Brooks will need to elevate his game to another level if the Suns are hoping to make a deep postseason run next year. Jalen Green, who struggled with injuries last season, will play a key role for them as well.
Brooks was rewarded with a three-year, $73 million contract extension in the summer after an impressive debut season in Phoenix. Now, it is up to him to prove why the Suns made the right decision in believing in him.
