John McEnroe has publicly addressed the shifting landscape of professional tennis and the increasingly difficult physical struggles faced by Novak Djokovic. The former world number one noted that the Serbian star’s challenging second half of the season has cast serious doubt on his long-term continuity.
According to McEnroe’s analysis, 2027 could very well mark the final professional year for the 24-time Grand Slam champion. This assessment follows a worrying string of physical limitations, highlighted by an abrupt first-round exit at the US Open against Mariano Navone. The American was talking on a Eurosport and HBO event, as reported by Punto de Break.
On one hand, you think that age is catching up with him, as it happens to all athletes at some point. On the other hand, he has had an incredible streak. He defeated Jannik Sinner in Australia, reached the final and won the first set against Carlos Alcaraz and played well. Then he reached the semifinals at Wimbledon and had a great victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime in the previous round. That made me think that by the time he got to the US Open, he was probably the third or fourth best player in the world. So what we saw in the first round was shocking. As they say, time is invincible.
Throughout various stages of the current season, Djokovic has demonstrated flashes of his vintage competitive strength against younger generations. However, grueling tournament conditions have frequently exposed severe energy deficits and physical distress on the court.
I don’t know what’s happening to him, you know, the heat and humidity. That can be a problem for anyone. This heat and humidity. It wasn’t unbearable heat, so I don’t know what’s going to happen next. I’m sure you know he’s thinking a lot about what’s ahead, but at the same time, I don’t think he wants to end that way, in the way you know what happened. Honestly, I don’t know what he’s going to do. He should do whatever makes him happy. Well, you would certainly think so. For starters, he’s 39, which for most people, including me, is past the expiration date for tennis. You don’t want to get to the point where you say, ‘Why did I stop when I could have maybe won more?’. That’s more or less what Novak is facing. He reached the final in Australia. He thinks: ‘Maybe I could win one more’.
McEnroe emphasized that while the physical tank is nearing empty, Djokovic’s intrinsic drive means he will refuse to walk away until he believes he can no longer capture a major title. Ultimately, the American legend believes the decision will rest entirely on what provides the veteran champion personal satisfaction.
Alexander Zverev Matches Novak Djokovic’s Stat at the US Open
Top-seeded German player Alexander Zverev advanced to the 2026 US Open final by defeating Karen Khachanov in straight sets. This milestone victory secured his third consecutive major final appearance of the 2026 season and the sixth Grand Slam final of his career.

Zverev’s path to the championship match included disciplined straight-set wins over Alejandro Tabilo, Luciano Darderi, and Botic van de Zandschulp. His composure in tight tiebreak scenarios proved decisive, entering the second-set breaker against Khachanov backed by a stellar 25-12 tiebreak record on tour that year.
By reaching this stage, Zverev moved level with Jannik Sinner at 7,950 points in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin. Furthermore, his performance elevated his major match record for the 2026 season to an impressive 24-2.
The German star entered the title clash as the reigning Roland Garros champion, having secured his maiden Grand Slam title earlier in the year. This final appearance also marked his second career opportunity at Flushing Meadows, following his previous appearance in the 2020 championship match.
Carlos Alcaraz Matches Novak Djokovic in 2026 Season Stats
Carlos Alcaraz put together a formidable 2026 ATP season, compiling a 26-4 record, translating to an 86.7% win rate. At the Grand Slam level, the Spanish star maintained an elite 11-1 record across 12 matches, showcasing his exceptional endurance in best-of-five formats.

During the Australian Open earlier in the year, Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic in the final to claim his first title in Melbourne. This victory made him the youngest man in tennis history to complete a Career Grand Slam at 22 years and 272 days old.
In addition to completing the Career Grand Slam, Alcaraz etched his name in the record books as the youngest man in the Open Era to secure seven major singles titles. His aggressive hard-court campaign also yielded a 21-3 record on the surface, reinforcing his dominance across multiple surfaces.
At the 2026 US Open, Alcaraz advanced through the initial rounds with victories over Roman Safiullin, Jaime Faria, Wu Yibing, and Tommy Paul. His tournament run ultimately concluded in a hard-fought five-set quarterfinal defeat against American rising star Ben Shelton.
