NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has had his hands full in recent months with a string of controversies involving team owners and sponsors in the NBA. Most of them were uncovered by Pulitzer-winning sports journalist Pablo Torre.
Before the start of the 2025-26 campaign, Torre broke out the story of the decade by exposing the Aspiration scandal. The scandal involved the Los Angeles Clippers and Kawhi Leonard. Subsequent investigations revealed a web of hidden sponsorship deals intended to circumvent the salary cap for their star player.
Recently, Torre’s latest investigation revealed some shady deals involving Mark Walter. Despite being under federal investigation, Walter sold the Los Angeles Lakers last month.
During a press conference featuring Silver, Torre asked him about the league’s vetting process and concerns that billionaires are using the NBA to ‘buy credibility.’ Silver answered:
We take the vetting process very seriously. We went through the full process we all do. We spoke to other leagues in which he has investments, and we found no red flags. Even to this day, these are, you can call them, allegations. But independent of Walter choosing to sell his team right now. He was not being investigated by our league.

Pablo Torre decided to focus his question on Mark Walter rather than the Clippers. Walter bought the Lakers for $10 billion a year ago. The deal was supposed to mark a new era for the Lakers. However, just a year later, he sold the franchise for $12.5 billion to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger. The sudden sale of the Lakers for a $2.5 billion profit raised a few eyebrows.
Torre may not have brought up the Clippers, as the NBA has concluded its investigation into the scandals. The NBA handed the franchise the strictest punishment in North American sports history.
The Clippers were stripped of five first-round picks and issued the owner, Steve Ballmer, a $30 million fine and a one-year suspension. Hence, instead of focusing on the already-meted-out punishment to the Clippers, Torre wanted to focus on Walter and his sale of the Lakers.
Fans react to Adam Silver’s response to the recent controversies involving team owners
With the Clippers investigation wrapped up, Adam Silver had to tackle questions surrounding the federal investigation of Mark Walter. However, the Commissioner revealed that the NBA conducted thorough checks and took its vetting process seriously and, hence, approved the sale of the Lakers.
After his answer, NBA fans quickly reacted on social media.
Silver still doesn't understand the problem or the position the league is in due to his decisions. He has the look of a man who has been rudely awakened from a too long nap,

Transparency matters, leagues need stronger checks before approving owners.

1. He didn’t acknowledge sponsor issues.

2. His naivety is shocking.
Most fans applauded Torre for the question he asked Silver. They were left unimpressed by Silver’s response and felt that he evaded the question by not really opening up about it.
Pablo Torre on the red flags around the Lakers sale
It is hard to believe that Mark Walter bought the Lakers to sell them just a year’s time later, despite profiting $2.5 billion. The sale took place while federal authorities were investigating Walter’s firms out of Chicago.

Suspicions rose further when it was rumored that he was planning to sell his shares in Chelsea FC to majority owner Clearlake Capital. Many experts concluded that Walter sold the Lakers in 2026 because of potential liquidity concerns.
With Kushner and Iger making him a good offer, Walter was quick to accept it, and the deal was completed in just three business days. The NBA and Silver cleared the second Lakers sale in less than a year and a half, and more questions came up surrounding the vetting process.
Adam Silver also mentioned that at this point in time, the allegations against Walter have not been proven yet. Till the investigation is concluded, he is not guilty of any charges till then. However, NBA fans will be hoping that the league’s crown jewel does not get flipped for a profit within a few years as well.
