The UFC heavyweight division saw plenty of movements recently after Tom Aspinall vacated his title. Ciryl Gane is now the undisputed champion, and he will defend his belt against rising star Josh Hokit at UFC 334 in November. Fellow heavyweight Alexander Volkov had plenty to say about that decision.
In December of 2024, Gane and Volkov faced off against each other in a rematch. Gane won the first fight by decision, but Volkov arguably won the second fight. However, the judges awarded Gane the victory in a controversial move that upset many fans.
Hokit didn’t even make his UFC debut until August 2025. In a short time, the polarizing heavyweight star climbed the heavyweight rankings and got the title shot.
Dana White told Volkov in the past that he would take care of him after the judges robbed him of victory against Gane. With that not materializing, Volkov mocked Hokit getting the next title shot.
Josh Hokit, from what I know about him, has clearly been dealing with some mental illness, so it’s very admirable for the UFC to put a guy with a serious mental condition into a title shot. Of course he should go in front of me. Guys with this kind of situation should fight first… This is the easiest way for an American heavyweight to get a title shot right now.
Alexander Volkov told Ariel Helwani
Volkov didn’t stop there. Fans felt that he was using Russian sarcasm like Islam Makhachev where something funny could also be taken seriously. Volkov said that he would wait for his shot as Hokit won’t get the opportunity again.
It’s an incredibly inspiring story of a guy with a mental illness who can fight for the heavyweight title. It’s very supportive from the UFC. It’s a very noble thing for the UFC to do for him with all his mental problems. So yeah, I support it. I can do it later. He can try first… I don’t think he’ll have another opportunity like this.

Alexander Volkov unexpectedly praises the UFC for giving Josh Hokit the title shot:

"I want to be honest with you… I’m very supportive of this fight from the UFC.

Hokit caught a lot of strays from Volkov during his interview with Ariel Helwani. Previously, Hokit got under the skin of Ilia Topuria when he kept insulting Alex Pereira ahead of UFC Freedom 250.
It appears that Volkov is also not a fan of Hokit. The Fresno State athlete goes all-out with his trash-talking persona, much to everyone’s dislike.
UFC 334 represents Hokit’s chance to silence all the doubters if he can defeat the Frenchman. On the other hand, it didn’t take long for Hokit to respond to Volkov on social media.
Josh Hokit fires back at ‘boring’ Alexander Volkov
If something is certain in the UFC at the moment, it is that Josh Hokit will not stand by while others insult him. Not too long ago, he doubled down on the trash-talks to Pereira and Topuria after they clashed during the UFC Freedom 250 press conference.

This time, ‘The Incredible Hok’ targeted Alexander Volkov. Hokit used the ‘mental illness’ diss from the Russian to fire back. Moreover, he ended the tweet by calling the Russian fighter as boring to watch.
Maybe he should catch my “mental illness” since he lost to the last 2 guys I beat. Has anyone ever watched a Volkov fight all the way through? He’s lucky to still be on the roster. Should have cut his boring (expletive) when they cut Almeida.

Hokit promised to bring violence in his upcoming fight against Ciryl Gane. If he get past Gane, there is a chance that Volkov could emerge as the next title challenger.
‘The Incredible Hok’ wants to be an active champion if he win the title. If that happens, the promotion will have another America vs Russia storyline waiting for them to put on a show.
