Whenever the Indiana Fever are involved, there is some form of controversy that tends to overshadow the basketball aspect. In their impressive performance in Game 2, an incident following A’ja Wilson and Sophie Cunningham getting tangled in the middle of the court blew up.

It had nothing to do with the latter or her teammates. The incident in question involved the reigning league and Finals MVP and a Fever fan sitting one level behind the courtside seats.

It all started when Wilson slammed Cunningham to the ground late in the fourth quarter, drawing a whistle. Instead of staying on the court, the Aces superstar was seen walking past the basket and started arguing with a fan.

Video replays showed the Fever fan had pointed a finger at the three-time champion, which probably provoked her. Later, Wilson made it clear to reporters that she was not going to take a man pointing a finger at her.

Not trying to be dramatic at all. I was just here having my morning coffee, and what a damn comeback year for the point. Who would have ever thought?

This was the Fever star taking a subtle jab at A’ja Wilson for trying to defend her actions when confronting a fan just for pointing a finger at her. Cunningham knows all too well how a finger point can rattle someone.

But it seems she was taking a shot at the best player in the world for being unable to keep her cool in a series-defining game. Now, Sophie Cunningham probably believes that the Aces are rattled, and it was all thanks to that fan.

Stephen A. Smith slams A’ja Wilson for unnecessary fan confrontation

While Sophie Cunningham relayed her usual sassy self to take shots at A’ja Wilson, Stephen A. Smith was more direct when First Take discussed the Fever fan confrontation incident.

It looks like an overreaction. When you tangle with another player, a fan standing up and pointing at you is not a crime. He’s a fan of the opposing team… Respectfully, what did he do? I don’t get it.

Stephen A. Smith said

The longtime analyst reiterated that had Wilson been right on her part, he would have defended her. But after watching all the clips, it seems the fan did nothing that opposing fans generally do not do.

In fact, Smith felt that the Aces’ center was the one in the wrong. She was the one who walked all over to the fan and confronted him. Whereas, this was more about the general narrative about Fever fans than what this man did.

Even arena investigations and witness testimonies proved that all he did was get up from his seat and point her out. If there was anyone wrong in this incident, it was A’ja Wilson.

A’ja Wilson escapes suspension and fine

While opinions on this incident have been split, the league decided to investigate and figure out who was in the wrong. Despite all the evidence pointing towards A’ja Wilson, it seems the WNBA will not add fuel to the fire by reprimanding her.

The WNBA has determined there will be no fine or penalty handed down to A’ja Wilson or any other Aces players following Tuesday’s Game 2 interaction with a fan, a league source tells The Athletic.

The league also did not issue punishments to the Aces’ bench players who went in to support their leading superstar.

Video evidence has proved that both the four-time league MVP and her teammates were in the wrong for entering the stands and confronting the Fever fan. But it seems the league does not want this to continue becoming a story.
