On Sunday, the San Diego Padres suffered a crushing 4-3 defeat against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 2 of the National League Division Series (NLDS). After the game, “Big Papi” David Ortiz made a huge statement and boldly claimed that the season was over for the Padres.
The NL West entered Game 2 on the back of a tough loss in Game 1. While trailing 3-2 on Saturday in the 9th inning, it seemed Ty France had hit a go-ahead home run.
However, the ball hit the closed roof of American Family Field and landed in the hands of Jackson Chourio. France was declared out, and the Padres ended up losing 3-2.
Oh. My. Goodness. This ball hit by France looked to potentially be a go-ahead home run, but it hit the roof and was caught, and was ruled an out. https://t.co/E6pnoausP7

In Game 2, the Padres struck first, fittingly with France. His RBI single put them up 1-0 early in the first inning.
With a 3-2 lead in their favor this time, they brought in relief pitcher Mason Miller for a 6-out save. The closer led the National League this year in saves.
After working the 8th inning without any hassle, he ran into trouble in the 9th inning. After Garrett Mitchell grounded out, he gave up back-to-back walks to Christian Yelich and Sal Frelick.
Though he managed to make pinch-hitter Andrew Vaughn fly out for the 2nd out, he then gave up a third walk of the inning to Gary Sanchez, which loaded the bases.
Then stepped Chourio. The left fielder had found his name in the headlines after Game 1 after he completed the catch of France, which had deflected off the roof.
In an epic at-bat, the 22-year-old managed to stay alive by beating a 103 mph fastball and taking a slider for a 2-2 count. On the 6th pitch of the at-bat, he connected on a 101 mph fastball down the center field for a base hit. Yelich and Frelick came around to score to win the game 4-3.
This was just the second walk-off hit of Chourio’s career. It was also just the second loss of the Padres through a walk-off hit in their postseason history.

The loss has put the Padres 0-2 down in this best-of-five series. While reacting to this on MLB ON FOX, David Ortiz dropped a bold claim. He apologized to the Padres fans and claimed that it was “over” for them.
I’m sorry, guys. I have to break it to you. I have so much love for San Diego and everything. But golly, you were supposed to win this game. Now, you are against the rope. It’s over. I’m sorry.

In a best-of-five postseason series, a comeback from 0-2 down has happened just 10 out of 93 times. The last time this happened was in 2017, when the New York Yankees came back from 0-2 down against the Cleveland Guardians.
So there is a high chance of Ortiz’s claim coming true. If the Padres, who do have a good home record, manage to turn things around, this take from the MLB Hall of Famer will end up on Freezing Cold Takes.
Alex Rodriguez shares positive message for Padres after falling 0-2 down
The San Diego Padres are now in a do-or-die situation. A loss on Tuesday night will bring an end to their 2026 season. While David Ortiz has written them off, his fellow analyst Alex Rodriguez shared a positive message for the Padres.

During their discussion, A-Rod claimed that the team could have easily been 2-0 up instead of 0-2 down if they had not left several runners in scoring position.
In the 2 games, the Padres left 20 runners on base while going just 3-for-18 with runners in scoring position. Had they been more clinical with the bat, things could have been different.
Here’s what I would say. They’re 0-2, but they can easily be 2-0. And that’s what I’ll be talking about tomorrow on the day off. And when you leave 20 men in scoring position, you know, if you get one or two hits, you’re 2-0. So, there’s a lot of if there, but now they’ve got to produce.
Alex Rodriguez said on MLB ON FOX
“Now it’s a tough task; you’re down two games.”

For Game 3, the Padres will have Nick Pavetta on the mound. The right-handed pitcher, who has missed a lot of time this season due to injury, has a 1.64 ERA in 5 starts since returning from the IL in September. He will go up against Dustin May in this game.
