One of the biggest controversies in the NASCAR Next-Gen era was the charter lawsuit filed by 23XI and FRM, that changed the whole sport. The lawsuit pitted NASCAR against, Michael Jordan, one of the biggest sports personalities in the history, and it was settled outside the court after two years long drama.
There were some serious enmities between the team leadership and NASCAR senior officials, but now it seems they are over the beef. Steve O’Donnell, the CEO, in an interview with Front Office Sports talked about MJ’s passion for the sport. He called the basketball legend a real fan of the sport, unlike many other celebrities associated with racing.
He shows up at every race. He’s passionate about the sport, and for NASCAR, you can’t pay for that. You can bring celebrities or athletes to the race who may or may not be [racing] fans, but he’s a true fan, and he cares about the sport.
Steve O’Donnell said.
The senior official then highlighted how it was awkward for him to sit across Michael Jordan in the court room. They were able to bury the hatchet after the conversation post-settlement, that made them realize they are both all-in to make the sport better.
Being in a courtroom, looking across and seeing Michael Jordan was just a little bit odd. But even during that time, and at the end of that trial, we had a discussion about the fact that he was all in, and so are we.
Steve O’Donnell added via Front Office Sports.
Further talking about the point, Steve O’Donnell highlighted how MJ skipped attending NBA All-Star Game for NASCAR races. That’s shows how passionate the Chicago Bulls legend is about his investment, and the sport wants exactly this type of owner.
Even during the NBA All-Star Game, Michael was with us at a NASCAR race. That shows his passion. He’s invested in the sport, he’s a winner, and he wants to see his team win, so we’re excited to have him.
Steve O’Donnell asserted.
Steve O’Donnell declares NASCAR will never have another commissioner
In the same conversation, O’Donnell talked about NASCAR’s hierarchy change ahead the 2026 season. Commissioner Steve Phelps was let go with O’Donnell and Ben Kennedy getting promotions. They have reshaped the leadership pyramid in a way that the Commissioner role is no longer necessary.

For us, I think we’ll leave it where it is. If you look at our sport, we’re different, and looking forward, I don’t expect us to have a commissioner. The job right now is to go out with all the different stakeholders, bring them together, and make some tough decisions. But we’re going to be a lot faster about what we do in terms of making decisions, smart ones, but really getting folks pivoted toward what is the art of the possible.
Steve O’Donnell said.
The leadership change so far has been a big positive for NASCAR, as the new decision regarding the car designs as well as selection of tracks have received positive welcome from the whole community. It would be interesting to see how the sport is going to evolve in the coming days.
