Hungary was one of the surprise packages in Euro 2020 since they were viewed as underdogs. Their defence was quite solid, and it continued as Hungary got off to a solid start in the World Cup, drawing 3-3 with a tenacious Poland squad before crushing group leaders San Marino 3-0. They then overcame today’s visitors Andorra 4-1 in the following game. However, after gaining momentum, they had two disastrous games, losing to England and Albania in quick succession. It was the first win for Koldo Alvarez’s side in all competitions since 2019. It is also only their fourth competitive victory since making their international debut in 1996. Their chances of qualifying for the next year’s tournament are slim as the Tricolours are placed just below Hungary at 5th position with 3 points.
