Gael Monfils had a stellar start to his 2022 season. He won the ATP Adelaide International in the lead-up to the Australian Open, his first title in two years. But, he was then forced to withdraw from his first-round match at the ATP Adelaide International 2 with a neck injury.

He showed no signs of fitness issues at the Australian Open and managed to reach the fourth round without dropping a set. He won his third-round match against Cristian Garin 7-6, 6-1, 6-3. He dropped only ten games in his first two rounds to win comprehensively against Federico Coria 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 and Alexander Bublik  6-1, 6-0, 6-4.

A week ago Miomir Kecmanovic was supposed to face World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the first round. But following the Serb’s deportation, owing to his vaccine status, Kecmanovic has made the most of this opportunity and has advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open, his best result thus far at any Grand Slam.

The World No.77 defeated lucky loser Salvatore Caruso 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round and followed it up with wins over Tommy Paul (7-6, 7-5, 7-6)  and Lorenzo Sonego (6-4,6-7, 6-2, 7-5) to make it to the round of 16.

This is the second meeting of the duo. Monfils leads their head-to-head 1-0. Their last meeting was at the ATP Paris Masters, which Monfils won 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Kecmanovic is playing in the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. En route to the fourth round, he defeated Tommy Paul and Lorenzo Sonego, both of them ranking higher than the Serbian. But a win against Monfils will be tough to achieve, as the Frenchman has been in great form as of late and already has a title in the bag this year. He is yet to drop a set thus far and will be looking to make the quarter-finals at Melbourne for the first time since 2016.

Prediction: Monfils to win in four sets.
