Christian Horner calls for “immediate” review of the F1’s budget cap restrictions

Christian Horner, the Red Bull team principal has recently called on the F1 regulators to have a look at the budget caps that have been set for the 2022 F1 season.

As per GPFANS Christian Horner believes that the budget caps for the 2022 season should be changed considering the ongoing economic crisis in the world.

The F1 teams are only allowed to use up to $140 million for 2022 with a $5 million decrease in allowance as part of parameters set during 2020.

The strain of the new restrictions has weighed heavily on the top teams in the sport and now with the ongoing crisis, the challenges for the 2022 season have increased exponentially. High inflation is affecting energy prices and Horner believes it will be difficult for teams to operate under the restrictions.

The issues have further escalated after the sanctions imposed on Russia, Europe’s main source of gas and oil, in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Christia Horner was asked if there was an impending squeeze from the ongoing crisis, Horner replied, “I think this is a very real problem because I think we have already seen extremely high inflation.”

What you have to remember is that when the budget cap was set back in the midst of the pandemic in the middle of 2020, nobody could have foreseen the circumstances we have in the world today.”

What we see going on in the world is only going to drive prices one way. Inflation looks like it could hit record amounts, we are seeing that impact already on things like air freight just to this event.”

He has further added, “It is a very serious problem we have to look at and address.”

This has a one-to-one impact on people’s jobs and livelihoods and so I think it is the duty of the regulator to look at this with a degree of urgency to make sure the relief is put in place to take into account what is going on in the world with the cost of living increases we are all going to see.”

Christian Horner has stated very valid points and it is going to be interesting to see whether the regulators are going to take action or are going to play the waiting game for a little while longer.
