“Physically, I’m not at 100%” : Enea Bastianini admits taking a huge risk in Portugal

When Ducati rider Enea Bastianini qualified in the P1 position for the much-awaited Portuguese Grand Prix, all his fans were sure he would win the race because the rider was absolutely in his peak form. The Grandé Premio de Portugal marked the fifth Grand Prix of this season of MotoGP. Bastianini has already won two races this season–in the season opener in Qatar and in the American Grand Prix in Austin.

With decent finishes in Indonesia and Argentina and two race wins in Qatar and Austin, Bastianini clinched the top position in the MotoGP Championship standings, going into the Portuguese GP. Now, last weekend’s event marked the beginning of the European leg of the Championship, and Enea Bastianini had big expectations from his first race on European soil.

While the Italian rider started off his race in the pole position, he could not maintain his lead for long as he crashed his bike during the race and lost out on the opportunity to score points. He had to eventually retire from the race.

Enea Bastianini began the Portugal GP at the top of the grid but, during the course of the race, he crashed out. He ended his race with a DNF and it pushed him from P1 in the Championship standings to P4, behings Quartararo, Rins, and Espargaro.

Reacting to the misfortune he suffered in Portugal, Enea Bastianini said, ‘Everything is ok. What happened–My feelings at the end weren’t so bad, after six or seven laps and I tried to push a little more but I couldn’t. Physically I’m not at 100% and I took a lot of risks and crashed”.

He further said, “With the bike I felt really good, the bike was incredible to do a good result today but my body wasn’t ready for this. My DNA is to push, to go forward and when I saw the bike in the conditions it was in, I did more and more.

Will Bastianini be able to get himself back up for the Jerez Grand Prix that is right around the corner? That is yet to be seen.
