IPL 2022 has enjoyed a perfect season so far with no game being delayed or disrupted due to rains or calamities. However, there is growing concern that the play-offs of IPL 2022 could have weather conditions interrupting matches with the monsoon season incoming. The Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata suffered heavy damage due to heavy rains, raising concern of the stadium will be ready to host the first Qualifier on Tuesday, 24th May.

So far there are no changes in the venue of the IPL play-offs. The Qualifier 1 and Eliminator shall be played at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. While the Qualifier 2 and finals of IPL 2022 shall be played in the Narendra Modi stadium in Gujrat, home of the IPL side, Gujrat Titans. Amidst the growing concern of play getting interrupted by rains, IPL has released the rules as to how the winner shall be determined incase of disruptions.

IPL table standing to determine winner of no play is possible

To start off, incase of a tie, a super over will be played to decide the winner in all the play-off games and finals. In case of a delay, each game will have an extra 2 hours stipulated over the 200 minutes of play for the full 20 overs to be played. This means that incase of delay, the game must begin by 9:40 at the max if all the 20 over are to be played. However, while teams retain the strategic time-out, the innings break will be cut by half.

The guidelines state, “The number of overs in the playoff match may, if necessary, be reduced so that each side has the opportunity to bat for five overs.” The game may be reduced to as much as 5 overs a side. In this case there will be no strategic time out and a 10 minutes innings break.

The guidelines further said, “For the Eliminator and each Qualifier playoff matches (where there is no reserve day), in the event that it is not possible to schedule a five-over match to complete by the end of the extra time on the original day, the teams will, if conditions permit, play a Super Over to determine the winner of the relevant Eliminator or Qualifier match,” the guidelines added. The Super Over would need to start at 12.50am latest for these matches to finish.

In the scenario where the Super Over is also not possible, “the team that finished highest in the league table after the 70 matches of the regular season shall be declared the winner of the relevant playoff match or final”. Since there is no reserve day for the qualifiers and eliminators, DLS method will be used if one innings is played. As for the finals, the the match will resume on the reserve day from the point the play was stopped. May 30 will be the reserve day for the finals in case no play is possible on 29th.

In case no play is possible after the toss in the final, teams will have a fresh toss on the reserve day. The IPL said the reserve day will comprise the same amount of playing time – five hours and 20 minutes including the two extra hours available in case of any disruption or rain.

The Guidelines said, “For the final, in the event that it is not possible to schedule a five over match to be completed by the end of the extra time on the reserve day, the teams will, if conditions permit, play a Super Over to determine the winner of the final. This means that the pitch and ground must be ready for play so that the Super Over can start at the latest by 1.20am (final).”
