‘Official’ Dominic Thiem withdraws from the 2022 Wimbledon Championships

Dominic Thiem

Former World No. 3 and current World No. 352, Dominic Thiem has made the final call on his participation at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships as the Austrian decided to skip the second Grand Slam of the season having earlier watched the 2022 Australian Open from the sidelines. Thiem had been struggling with form and the decision to skip the Championships is not a surprising one.

With no points on offer at this year’s Wimbledon and given Thiem’s struggles on the surface, it wouldn’t have made much sense for the 2020 US Open winner to risk his fitness on the surface that will not be used later in the season as the majority of the Tour shift their focus towards the hardcourts on which the remainder of the Tour is played out. Thiem had suffered consecutive first-round exits in Wimbledon in his last two appearances in 2018 and 2019 and with a 5-6 record at the Grand Slam, it is probably best for him to not participate this year.

Thiem after deciding to sit out the Australian leg of the Tour, made his debut at the 2022 Marbella Challenger but lost in straight-sets to Pedro Cachin of Argentina. He then made his return to the ATP Tour at the 2022 Serbia Open where he went down in 3-sets to John Millman. The one set that Dominic won against Millman remains his only set won this season so far.

Since then, he has lost in straight-sets to Benjamin Bonzi in Estoril, Andy Murray in Madrid, Fabio Fognini in Rome, Marco Cecchinato in Geneva and Hugo Dellien in the 2022 French Open. With a good month at his hands to plan for the remainder of the season, Thiem will come firing on all cylinders to take his first win of the season when the hardcourt season resumes.
