Martin Brundle and David Croft

Martin Brundle and David Croft are an iconic commentary team, and the two have been leading Formula 1 coverage for Sky Sports since 2011. There has been no shortage of iconic moments with the team, such as ‘He won in Spa, he wins in Monza’ back from the 2019 Italian Grand Prix, and ‘But here comes Sebastian Vettel!” from the 2018 Belgian Grand Prix.

But of course, eventually, as is the case in every field and every job, they must eventually pass the baton, and perhaps move on from commentating. To new Formula 1 fans, it’s certainly an odd prospect to have someone else commentating on the race other than ‘Brundle and Crofty’ but there are a few interesting candidates.

Even the great Murray Walker could not do this job forever. In a recent thread on Reddit on the official Formula 1 subreddit, fans discussed prospects regarding potential replacements for the iconic pairing.

Jenson Button? Alex Jacques? Alex Brundle?

Jenson Button
Jenson Button is a popular candidate amongst fans.

There are many candidates. The most popular ones seem to be Alex Jacques and Alex Brundle (son of Martin Brundle), and many users expressed their support for the pairing. Jenson Button was also popular. One user wrote: “Alex Jacques and Alex Brundle, their commentary for F1TV a few years back was phenomenal.”

Others echoed the sentiments, with replies along the lines of: “Love them on F2 [Formula 2].” and a suggestion that a recent Formula 1 driver paired with the two aforementioned will make a great commentating team. To this, one user suggested Alice Powell, who currently drives in the W series with Click2drive.

The user wrote: “After this weekend I won’t sleep on Alice Powell’s future as a pundit. She was excellent. Insightful and importantly quick-witted.”

One user jokingly suggested: “[Charles] Leclerc’s racing engineer.” Leclerc’s racing engineer is Xavier Marcos Pedros, and has worked with the Monegasque since his move to Ferrari. A reply read: “Question – Crofty are you ok option Broadcast option E?”

Jenson Button was also a popular answer, as many feel that an ex-driver’s insight is always great. Button does show up quite a bit in Formula 1 broadcasts, and he also does work for Sky Sports as a pundit. He’s a popular figure among the fans, and especially amongst the British fans, so he is definitely up there as well. A user suggested that Button be paired up with Alex Jacques, which is a great prospect.
