“From driving DoorDash to playing alongside LeBron” Matt Ryan’s story went from working in a cemetery to playing for LA Lakers in a year

Matt Ryan

Matt Ryan of the Los Angeles Lakers has come a long way. The NBA is a cruel and inhumane league. It makes no difference who you are or how good you are. It’s a business, at the end of the day. Future Hall-of-Famers such as Carmelo Anthony have struggled to find teams. We’ve seen former All-Stars like Isaiah Thomas have their careers derailed by a single injury. It is, however, a wish-granting factory with the power to change someone’s life overnight. Matt Ryan has experienced the same fate. The 25-year-old was recently added to the Lakers’ season roster.

Ryan was selected by the Grand Rapids Gold in October 2021, giving him his first shot at the NBA or an affiliated league. He then signed a two-way contract with the Celtics. Ryan caught the Lakers’ attention after a strong summer league performance for the Cs and was signed for training camp. Matt provides the 2020 NBA Champions with much-needed perimeter shooting. With Troy Brown Jr. out, Ryan may get some playing time and make an impression on the team.

“It’s been like a movie,” Ryan said prior to the Celtics’ practise in the NBA finals last season. “The last year has essentially been a movie for me.” I was driving DoorDash and working outside at a cemetery a year ago. I’m now in the NBA Finals.” Ryan has been grinding for the past year, bouncing around from stop to stop as he pursues his dream of playing professional basketball. The plan had been for him to travel to Australia last summer, but the Cavaliers brought him in for Summer League. In four games, Ryan averaged 11.3 points and 3.8 rebounds.

He was signed by the Nuggets for training camp, but he was soon waived. Ryan then decided to stay with the Grand Rapid Golds. Ryan also worked out for USA Basketball’s World Cup qualifying roster in February 2022. The Los Angeles Lakers are attempting to return to the playoffs after missing the play-in games last year. Just like last year, they made a lot of roster changes. Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis, and LeBron James remain their star players. Kendrick Nunn and Austin Reaves have also been retained. Apart from these five, the remaining 15 players on the roster are all new.
