“That’s our people’s mentality”- Ajith’s latest movie takes a massive dig at MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings

MS Dhoni; Ajith Kumar

The blockbuster Tamil movie, Thunivu starring Ajith Kumar, which was released theatrically across Tamil Nadu on January 11, has been well received by many. But a line in the film did not go well with cricket fans, especially those of Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Few years back an IPL team was banned, when they came back people started worshipping them instead of telling them that they cheated and being against them. That’s our people’s mentality,” read the dialogue from the movie Thunivu. The meaning of Thunivu, a Tamil word is gutsy.

The film is about a criminal mastermind and his team forming a plan for a bank robbery across Chennai. It’s written and directed by H.Vinoth and produced by Boney Kapoor, while the music is composed by Ghibran.

Why CSK was banned from IPL?

CSK is undoubtedly one of the most followed franchises of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Under MS Dhoni, they have won the title four times- in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021.

CSK has a massive fan following, the reason is simply that it’s under the leadership of Dhoni, who is India’s most successful captain and one of the most admired people in India. But CSK along with Rajasthan Royals (RR) was banned for two years due to spot-fixing charges. The reports of the spot-fixing scandal had sent a devastating blow throughout the country.

CSK’s then owner, Gurunath Meiyappan, was arrested after the final between CSK and their arch-rival Mumbai Indians in 2013 on the charges of spot-fixing. Even the then-owner of RR, Raj Kundra, was accused of the same.

The Supreme Court of India appointed former Chief Justice of India, R M Lodha, to investigate the matter after which CSK and RR were banned for two years. Raj Kundra and Meiyappan faced a lifetime suspension from being involved in any type of cricket match.

The franchise made a comeback in 2018 and lifted the trophy again. Next year, they reached the finals but faced defeat by Rohit Sharma-led MI by just one run. After a disappointing 2020 season, they made a strong comeback in the next season to lift the coveted trophy for the fourth time. The 2022 year was again forgettable for the Chennai-based franchise.
