On Saturday, the New York Mets organized their Amazin’ Day fanfest event at Citi Field. This saw some of their new signings come together and spend some time. During this, A.J. Minter, who recently joined them on a 2-year $22 million deal, threw shade at fans of their cross-town rivals, the New York Yankees.

Minter has established himself as one of the top relievers in the game. During his tenure with the Atlanta Braves, the southpaw pitched with a 3.28 ERA and managed to pick up 422 strikeouts. While he has mostly worked up as a set-up pitcher, he also has experience as a closer.

This led the Mets to rope him in. Along with him, the Mets have also acquired two former Yankees starting pitchers Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas.

During the fanfest on Saturday, he joined these two players for a panel discussion. In this, he praised the Mets fans and took a shot at the New York Yankees fanbase.

You can tell Mets fans are truly baseball fans. They get baseball, not like the other side of town. These are the true diehard fans. They’re going to be with you till the end.

A.J. Minter said as per SNY

Minter is not the only Mets star who has taken a dig at the Yankees after joining them this offseason. Juan Soto took a similar jab at his former employees after penning down a mega 15-year $765 million deal.

The 4-time All-Star claimed that New York had been a “Mets town” for a long time. The Yankees fans, who were already angry with him for joining their rivals, would slam him even further. Sportscaster Rich Eisen would also blast him and urge him to “get out of here” after this comment from him.

Will A.J. Minter be part of the Opening Day squad for the Mets?

The New York Mets have been highly aggressive in the offseason this year. They have landed some top names during this period to bolster their squad for the upcoming season. One of these signings saw them land A.J. Minter and add him to their bullpen. The big question now is, will be part of the Opening Day squad of the team though?

Minter has been out of action since last August after he underwent hip surgery. The injury to his hip limited him to just 39 games in the 2024 season. Despite this limited time, he was effective once again and pitched with a 2.62 ERA.

The player though is confident that he could be back on the mound for the Opening Day. On Saturday, he provided an health update and expressed that his hip was doing fine.

The goal is to be ready for Opening Day, hopefully. With that being said, my hip does feel really good. I’m happy where I am. I don’t want to put a date on it.

A.J. Minter told the reporters

The Mets will begin the new season against the Houston Astros on March 27. Last year they started the season going 1-5 in their opening six games. However, they did bounce back and reached the National League Championship series where they were eliminated by eventual World Series winners, Los Angeles Dodgers.
