A super-confident Israel Adesanya says he will one day move to the heavyweight division; says beating Jan Blachowicz will be a “big f**k you to” Jon Jones
Israel “the Last Stylebender” Adesanya is right now the UFC’s hottest property. The Nigerian-born New Zealander hasn’t lost even a single fight in his professional MMA career, with his most recent victory coming over Paulo Costa of Brazil. Ever since his domination of the previously undefeated Paulo Costa, fans have been wanting to see Israel Adesanya vs. Jon Jones, badly.
And, likewise the two fighters, lived up to the expectations of the fans, although on social media. The nasty twitter spat, the two had, ran for weeks, until it hit a momentary pause when Jon Jones started going against the fans of retired UFC Lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov. Now, Jon Jones vs Israel Adesanya is something even a plastic UFC fan would love to see.
But, before that Israel Adesanya has an uphill task in the form of Jan Blachowicz waiting in the light heavyweight division; after it was confirmed by UFC President Dana White earlier this weekend. Jan Blachowicz recently won the light heavyweight title after defeating Dominick Reyes at UFC 253; who came really close to defeating Jon Jones earlier this year. Should Adesanya beat Blachowicz, then a ripper of a contest with Jon Jones is inevitable.
“This is perfect for that Jones fight I keep talking about” – Adesanya
In an extensive interview with Submission Radio, Adesanya spoke about a wide range of topics. Elsewhere, Robert Whittaker defeated Jared Cannonier recently, and many thought that it would eventually result in a rematch between The Aussie and Israel Adesanya. But, Whittaker wasn’t keen about it. Speaking of Whittaker’s recently concluded match, Adesanya said, “Robert did well to stifle Jared and broke his arm, and I was looking forward to that fight. So, I was like, alright. And then it’s like the ultimate alley-oop from the universe.
I’m like, yes, it’s perfect. And this is the thing, you have to be flexible in this game. In life, you have to be flexible, cause nothing’s certain, nothing’s given. The landscape of things change all the time. And yeah, this is just right there for the taking. So, I was like, this is perfect. This is perfect for that Jones fight I keep talking about, this is perfect leading up to it.”
The “Last Stylebender” had a lot of praise for his next opponent, Jan Blachowicz. Speaking of the current lightweight champion Adesanya was in awe of his “Polish Power”, saying, “With Jan, he’s a good fighter, he’s solid on the ground, he’s awkward on the feet, very dangerous, and he poses a lot of problems. And like, the Whittaker fight wouldn’t get me hard. This gets me hard.
Like, this is like, alright, let’s go. He’s dangerous on the ground, he’s awkward on the feet, got that legendary Polish power. But yeah, everyone’s got power, right? I mean, it’s something I proved in my last fight. I told y’all. You have to delivery that power somehow, you have to get it to the target. I’m not the easiest target to hit.”
“It’s just a big f*ck you to him” – Adesanya on Jon Jones
Adesanya also said that, beating Jan Blachowicz would be a big psychological blow for Jon Jones, as he will claim the light heavyweight belt with just one win, whereas Jon kept fighting in the division for 10 years and moved nowhere. He was quoted as saying, “It’s just a big f*ck you to him, just to be like, I did something you couldn’t. I mean, he cleared the division of the light heavyweight twice over and then started fighting recycled middleweights. So, don’t come at me talking about ‘move up in weight and fight’ when you can’t even do the same thing after over 10 years in the company. So, I’m actually about to do it. It’s a good fight for me to do it with.”
Adesanya went on, even speaking about the prospect of eventually moving to the heavyweight division. Speaking of this Adesanya said, “I realize I’m about to do something in literally in three years, what Jones hasn’t even done in over how long in the company? Over 10 years .I’m about to do it in three years and move up in weight. He’s doing it now after how long? And we’re still waiting to seeing if he’s actually gonna do it.
And like, it’s crazy how everything’s just set up, man. [When] I take this belt from Jan, if for whatever reason Jones actually moves up and fights at heavyweight, like, imagine if he got the belt somehow, by some freak of nature, and I’m like, f*ck you, I’m going to heavyweight then. Three belts at the same time.”
