2-time All-Star Devin Williams is going through a difficult time on the mound. On Tuesday, the pitcher once again blew away the game for the New York Yankees against the Texas Rangers. Manager Aaron Boone was then subjected to massive criticism from fans on social media for his decision to stick with Williams.

The right-handed pitcher has started to struggle again in recent weeks. Following a poor start to the season, he got back to his form before the All-Star break. Since that midseason break, his early-season troubles have resurfaced.

Just a day ago, Williams had blown the save against the Rangers. After some solid relief performances from Luke Weaver, Camilo Doval, and David Bednar, Williams had a 1-run lead to protect in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher ended up conceding a game-tying solo home run against Joc Pederson, who was batting at a mere .126 average before his home run.

With the game tied at 5-5 after nine innings, extra innings were required. Jake Bird, who went to relieve Williams from his duties in this game, gave up a 3-run walk-off home run leading to an 8-5 Yankees loss.

Despite that blown save, the 30-year-old pitcher was once again trusted by Aaron Boone. The Yankees manager handed him the pitch in the 8th inning with the game still scoreless.

After loading up the bases with two walks and one out, Williams went up against Rowdy Tellez. The two of them would engage in a heated at-bat. On a 3-2 full count, Tellez managed to lift his shot into the center field on the 10th pitch at-bat. This hit from him saw the Rangers cash in 2 runners as they broke the deadlock and took a 2-0 lead.

The Yankees were unable to put up any runs in the top of the ninth inning and lost their 5th successive game with Williams being credited for the loss.

Fans lose it as Aaron Boone puts Devin Williams in relief position

There is no denying the fact that Devin Williams has struggled in his debut season with the New York Yankees. The former National League Rookie of the Year has failed to live up to his usual standards while donning the pinstripes of the Yankees.

Following another catastrophic showing, fans on social media would lose it. Many of them once again attacked Aaron Boone and questioned his decision to use Williams. One user wrote, “single handedly derailed the season” while slamming the Yankees manager for this.

The Yankees have now lost 5 games in a row and have fallen below the Seattle Mariners in the final American League Wild Card spot. If the Yankees end up getting swept again, they will fall out of playoff positions for the first time this season.

Worrying stats regarding Devin Williams sums up his 2025 season

In the past three seasons, Devin Williams was one of the top relief pitchers in the game. So when the New York Yankees acquired him in a trade, they were left hyped up. However, things have not gone well for him, and a worrying stat has now summed up his 2025 season.

Williams pitched with a 1.93, 1.53, and 1.25 ERA in the last three seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers. During this time, he combined to give up just 26 runs in 148 games.

This season, he has already given up 26 runs. In 47 appearances for the Yankees this year, Williams has pitched with an ERA of 5.44 and conceded 26 runs.

Following the game on Wednesday, the Yankees will take on another AL West team, the Houston Astros. The Bronx Bombers will need their bullpen, especially Williams, to step up if they are to make a deep postseason run again this year.
