Ahead of the series finale between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees on Sunday, rookie pitcher Hunter Dobbins made a bold claim. The Red Sox star claimed that he would rather ‘retire‘ than play for the Yankees. Manager Aaron Boone would later call him “young” and dropped a unique reaction towards it.
The youngster was making his first start against the Yankees in this heated rivalry. His father has been a huge fan of the Red Sox, so that would explain why he would dislike the Yanks.
In the pre-interview for the game, he would speak with the Boston Herald regarding his first appearance in the Bronx. The 25-year-old made some spicy comments and expressed that he would not sign with the Yankees at any cost.
If the Yankees were the last team to give me a contract, I’d retire.

Following these comments, the Yankees were fueled up. In the first inning of the game, Captain Aaron Judge smashed a 2-run home run.
Dobbins, though, had the last laugh as he outlasted Yankees starter Carlos Rodon and was backed up by his team’s offense. He ended up getting the credit for the win as the Red Sox took the series with a 11-7 win.
After the game, manager Aaron Boone made his feelings known regarding this. He would brush off the comments from the rookie pitcher and laugh a bit.
He’s young. I don’t know. I don’t think it’s a dig at our players. It’s an interesting comment as a player to make that. I think it’s just a comment of his love of his team is all. A little funny.

Aaron Judge comments on Hunter Dobbins’ statement before the game
With the two teams winning one game each, Hunter Dobbins spiced up things before the game with a bold statement. Aaron Judge, the Yankees captain, later admitted that he was on his mind after he found out about it.

The American League MVP would smash a 2-run home run off the sixth pitch of Dobbins in the first inning. His 22nd home run of the season gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
He would hit another 2-run home run in the 9th inning to make it a 11-7 game. Despite his heroics, he was unable to help his team emerge victorious.
While speaking with the reporters after the game, Judge also admitted that he was ‘surprised’ to see someone say that apart from Ken Griffey Jr., who had refused to play for the Yankees.
I really didn’t hear about it until Eduardo Pérez told me before the game. I’ve only heard Ken Griffey say that, so I was a little surprised.

Hunter Dobbins reacts to Yankees’ comments regarding his previous statement
Hunter Dobbins made it pretty clear that he would never join the New York Yankees. He would receive some heat for these words. While speaking to the press after the game, the pitcher expressed that he knew something like this would happen.

The pitcher threw in 5 innings and gave up 3 runs through 2 home runs. Despite some heckling from the fans, the pitcher remained locked in and was able to get the last laugh.
You can’t really say something like that and not expect a passionate fan base like the Yankees’ to say something. If anything, it made the rivalry atmosphere feel a lot more fun. I enjoyed it a lot. Looking forward to more of it in the future to kind of get this rivalry going.
Hunter Dobbins was solid tonight and kept the Red Sox in the game until the offense came alive.
