On Wednesday, Aaron Boone took part in his first press conference ahead of the 2026 season. During this, the New York Yankees manager responded to the comments of a former Yankee star who took aim at them recently.
Last year, the Yankees were looking to do one better than 2024. After failing in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Bronx Bombers were looking to go one step further than last time and climb the top of the MLB mountain once again.
During the season, they faced some tough competition from the Toronto Blue Jays. The Canadian side dominated the Yankees and went 8-5 in the regular season against them.
Their better head-to-head record against them saw them clinch the American League East Division title despite both teams finishing with a similar 94-68 record.
The Yankees then went face-to-face against the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card Series. As the two teams battled on, the Blue Jays waited for the winners.
In the end, the Yankees took down their rivals in the best-of-three series and set up an American League Division Series (ALDS) clash with the Blue Jays. Once again, the Toronto-based side dominated them.
The Blue Jays ended up outscoring the Yankees 34-19 in 4 games and eliminated them from the playoffs. They went on to reach the World Series, where they lost in Game 7 against the Dodgers, which saw the LA-based side repeat as champions.
Ahead of the 2026 season, former Yankees star Isiah Kiner-Falefa made some strong comments. After signing with the Red Sox this year, the utility man claimed that he and the Blue Jays were hoping to face the Yankees in the ALDS, as they felt that the Red Sox were a tougher opponent than them.
We thought it was a better matchup for us the other way (to face the Yankees)… We definitely felt (Boston) was a tougher matchup for us. Once we saw the other team, we were a lot happier.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone would respond to this comment from his ex-player. While speaking with the reporters on Wednesday, the 52-year-old did not seem too interested in the claim. When asked if that bothered him, Boone denied it.
I guess he was right. Little surprising to hear IKF say that, but whatever, that’s fine. Not really, honestly. You got to play who you play. Whatever.

Kiner-Falefa, who played for the Yankees during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, started just one of the four ALDS games against his former team. He found his name in the spotlight following the Blue Jays’ loss in Game 7, as many questioned whether he could have done better while running from third base to home plate in the 9th inning after being brought in as the pinch-runner.
Aaron Boone provides positive update regarding Gerrit Cole
As the Spring Training inches closer, players have started to report to training camps. On Wednesday, Aaron Boone provided a positive update regarding team’s ace pitcher Gerrit Cole.

The 2023 Cy Young Award winner missed the entirety of last season following an injury during Spring Training. He would undergo the Tommy John Surgery.
A few days back, reports claimed that he could make his return to the team by mid-May. On Wednesday, Boone expressed that the pitcher had started taking bullpen sessions and could make an appearance in the upcoming Spring Training.
He’s thrown a number of pens already… He is scheduled to to begin lives in a couple weeks.

Boone also spoke regarding Carlos Rodon. Like Cole, Rodon is also expected to start the season on the injured list and return by April or May. Regarding him, Boone expressed that he was not far behind from the start of the season.

The pitching department is one area that the Yankees were looking to bolster. After losing two of their relief pitchers, Devin Williams and Luke Weaver, the team turned their attention to Miguel Cabrera and Freddy Peralta as potential trade targets.
In the end, they lost out on both. Cabrera was traded to the Chicago Cubs by the Miami Marlins, while Peralta was traded to the New York Mets by the Milwaukee Brewers. The Yankees did add Ryan Weathers from a trade with the Marlins.
